WIEN.- From classical modernism to contemporary art the exhibition combines chronological order and the confrontation of works from different generations of artists that exhibit correspondences in their subject matter. This makes art history since the beginning of modernism visible as a living dialogue between the past and the present. The focus is on art works that led to decisive changes and developments in both classical modernism and in the 1960s and 1970s. This is fundamental to an understanding of contemporary art with its multimedia and interdisciplinary approaches. Figurative and abstract tendencies along with the subject of figure and landscape are structural principles in the museums holdings of classical modernism. They can be found in the works of Alberto Giacometti, René Magritte, Frantiek Kupka, Henri Matisse or Pablo Picasso. Comparing current works, such as those by Gerhard Richter or Herbert Brandl, not only reveals the importance of the classics fro ... The show features some 130 artists represented by 125 international galleries. Conceived as a showcase of contemporary painting, the exhibition also features installations, works on paper, video, photography and sculpture which deal thematically with painting as a medium. Alongside with prominent contemporary paintings and works by international artists dealing with the medium, abc also presents an historical timeline of sorts on the discourse of painting: here, the medium is re-cast as an artistic alternative or possibility, not an ideology. The participating artists were selected under the curatorial guidance of Rita Kersting, (former director of the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen), who ... More

TALLAHASSEE (AP).- A Florida museum said it has been ordered to temporarily hang onto a borrowed 16th Century Italian painting of Christ holding the cross, as U.S. and Italian authorities seek to resolve questions of ownership amid claims the work had been stolen from a Jewish family in World War II. The Baroque painting was one of 50 works lent by a famous Milan museum to the Mary Brogan Museum of Art & Science in Tallahassee. The work was part of a display in the museum from March until earlier this month. The museum's chief executive officer Chucha Barber said she was instructed by the U.S. Attorney's office in July to retain the painting until the ownership issues were resolved. "My initial reaction was that this was an important opportunity for the Brogan ... Sept 8th through Oct 15th. During the nearly five decades of his career Ronnie Landfield has stayed true to his course as a painter of soaring veils of color. Louis Zona, Director of the Butler Institute of American Art, wrote: To stand in front of a Landfield painting is to be transported into a world where color feeds upon color and every inch of the canvas is considered. Ronnie Landfield was the youngest of the youthquake generation of American artists of the 1960s. He began his career at the Kansas City Art Institute at the age of 16. By 1969 his luminous paintings had already been exhibited in museum exhibitions such as the Whitney Annual (later Biennial). He had his first solo e ... More

WASHINGTON (AP).- An analysis of 2 million-year-old bones found in South Africa offers the most powerful case so far in identifying the transitional figure that came before modern humans findings some are calling a potential game-changer in understanding evolution. The bones are from Australopithecus sediba. The research places that pre-human branch of the evolutionary tree as the best candidate to be the ancestor of the human line, said Lee R. Berger of the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. The bones, found in 2008 in the fossil-rich cave region of Malapa near Johannesburg, show a head-to-foot combination of features of Australopithecus and the human genus, Homo. "It's as if evolution is caught in one vital moment, a stop-action snapshot of evolution in ... More

LONDON.- Gagosian Gallery presents sculptures and a large-scale installation by Mike Kelley. The Kandors series, which Kelley initiated in 1999, are sculptural depictions of Supermans birthplace Kandor. The popular Superman story recounts the adventures of an alien being sent to Earth as a baby to escape the total destruction of his home planet Krypton. However, it turns out that Kandor was not, in fact, destroyed. Shrunk and bottled by a villain, the futuristic city was later rescued by Superman and protected under a bell jar in his sanctuary, the Fortress of Solitude. For almost a quarter-century in comic-book time, Kandor and its miniature citizens survived in Supermans care, sustained by tanks of atmosphere, a constant reminder of his lost past and a metaphor for his psychic disconnection from his adopted planet. NEW YORK, N.Y.- The Tibor De Nagy Gallery presents an exhibition of recent oil paintings by John Beerman. The exhibition marks the artists fourth with the gallery. Best known for his luminous depictions of the Hudson River Valley, the exhibition focuses on these works as well as landscapes and scenes from the artists native North Carolina, to where he has returned after decades living in New York. Beermans poetic sensibility can be felt in his treatment of his natural surroundings, whether in the contours of a river or in the dappled midday light reflecting off a wooded path. Best-selling author of Under the Tuscan Sun and fellow North Carolinian Frances Mayes writes in the exhibition catalogue: Like a poet who masters all the traditional forms then goes his own way, John Beerman obviously absorbed the work of Asher B. ATHENS (AP).- A leading Greek art expert has described two suspects who received a stolen 17th century artwork and were then arrested when they left the museum label on the back as "amateurs." The painting one of several versions of "The Calydonian Boar Hunt" by Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens was stolen in Belgium a decade ago and recovered in Athens in a Sept. 1 police raid. Police and Greek cultural authorities presented the painting Thursday. A 64-year-old man and 40-year-old woman accused of receiving the stolen work have been charged with money laundering. National Art Gallery director Marina Lambraki-Plaka referred to the two Friday as "amateurs unless they had some other reason for keeping the identification details on the back of the painting." ... The opening of the enormous and atmospheric oil tanks in the former power station on the banks of the Thames will provide flexible, subterranean "lunar" spaces and form the foundation for a further expansion of the world's most visited modern art museum. The expansion will also include a new 64-metre high building and is set to be completed in 2016. "The oil tanks will give visitors a new way to explore and experience art at Tate Modern.
