COLOGNE.- Pablo Picasso was not only a great artist but also a master of self-dramatization. His face is at least as well known as his outstanding oeuvre. All of the leading 20th-century portraitists photographed Picasso - and some of these portraits went on to become icons. In the exhibition "MemyselfandI. Photo Portraits of Picasso" Museum Ludwig is showing some 250 photographs by such artists as Richard Avedon, Cecil Beaton, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lee Miller and Man Ray. This is the first time the question of the conflict between Picasso's desire to control how he was portrayed and the creative demands of his portraitists has been addressed in an exhibition. International loans and some 40 pivotal works from Museum Ludwig's own collection allow ... NEW YORK, NY.- Paul Kasmin Gallery presents Geometric Variations, the first New York gallery exhibition to explore the historical importance of Frank Stellas iconic square paintings from the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition includes large single and double canvasses from Stellas Concentric Square and Mitered Mazes series, as well as the seminal New Madrid painting from his Benjamin Moore series. Stella began covering square canvases in alkyd house paint in 1961. Like his earlier Black, Aluminum and Copper paintings, these new square paintings articulated the relationship between the two-dimensional picture plane and its three-dimensional support. Unlike the previous works, they were characterized by a crisp regularity, rigid symmetry and all-over flatness. As the art historian and curator William S. Rubin wrote, In their extreme simplicity, and the absolute evenness ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Gagosian Gallery presents an exhibition of paintings by Bob Dylan. Dylan's drawings and paintings are marked by the same constant drive for renewal that characterizes his legendary music. He often draws and paints while on tour, and his motifs bear corresponding impressions of the many different environments and people that he encounters. A keen observer, Dylan works from real life to depict everyday phenomena in such a way that they appear fresh, new, and mysterious. The Asia Series, a visual journal of his travels in Japan, China, Vietnam, and Korea, comprises firsthand depictions of people, street scenes, architecture and landscape, which can be clearly identified by title and specific cultural details, such as Mae Ling, Cockfight, The Bridge, and Hunan Province. Conversely, there are more cryptic paintings often of personalities and situations, such Big Brother and Opium, or LeBelle Cascade, ... NEW YORK, NY.- David Zwirner presents an exhibition of new paintings by Raoul De Keyser, on view at the gallerys 525 West 19th Street space. For nearly fifty years, De Keyser has created subtly evocative paintings and works on paper which appear at once straightforward and cryptic, abstract and figurative. Composed of basic but indefinable shapes and marks, his works often invoke spatial and figural illusions, though they remain elusive of any descriptive narrative. In this exhibition, De Keyser presents small-scale compositions that appear to be variations of an abstract idea. Certain forms reoccur across a number of works, such as a thick elongated line with a round head at its end, the porous outline of a circle, or a sketchy grid. Yet a serial logic remains difficult to pinpoint and the constancy of his works derives rather from the physical characteristics of the medium of painting itself, with the relationshi ... More

LONDON.- Several works by the renowned graffiti artist Banksy were sold yesterday evening (21 September 2011) in a packed saleroom at Bonhams, New Bond Street, as part of its Urban Art sale. Leading the way was a work featuring one of Banksys most iconic images, the monkey, entitled Monkey Detonator, which had attracted a pre-sale estimate of £70,000 90,000, and was sold for £97,250. Executed in 2000, this canvas displays the typically dark sense of humour which has endeared Banksy to both art collectors and the general public. In a sale that realised £534,700 in total with 95% sold by value, competitive bidding was also in evidence on other original Banksys featured in the sale. Particularly impressive prices were paid for Balloon Girl (estimate £20,000 30,000), which sold for £55,250; Precision Bombing (£20,000); and HMV Dog (£13,750). LOS ANGELES (REUTERS).- A Beatles contract for a 1965 California concert that reveals that the Fab Four refused to play before a segregated audience has sold for $23,033 -- more than four times its estimated price . The contract, which was signed by the Liverpool group's manager, Brian Epstein, specified that they "not be required to perform in front of a segregated audience" for their August 31, 1965, show at the Cow Palace in Daly City, California. The Cow Palace concert was part of the Beatles' third major tour of the United States. Signed on March 24, 1965, the contract guaranteed the band $40,000 against gross box office receipts of more than $77,000.
