BERN.- At the beginning of the 20th century, Hermann and Margrit Rupf laid the foundations for a collection that is now regarded as one of the leading of its kind for European modern art. Due to the fact that a foundation was established in the 1950s in the Kunstmuseum Bern, the collection is open to the public and is being, up to the present and beyond, constantly enlarged. The exhibition presents modernist artworks in dialogue with contemporary art. Thus Pablo Picasso is confronted by Meret Oppenheim, Fernand Léger meets Donald Judd, and Paul Klee finds himself face-to-face with Ilya Kabakov. The exhibition is showing a representative selection of the Rupf Foundation accessions. The modernist artworks chosen for the exhibition are being shown in the immediate vicinity of contemporary art, encouraging a dialogue between the different epochs. As the joint proprietor of the haberdashery store Hossmann ... More

The work measures 21.6cm by 15.9cm and comes to market from a private collection. Discussing this work and its auction sale, Oliver Barker, Deputy Chairman Sotheby’s Europe and Senior International Specialist in the Contemporary Art Department, said: “This portrait was executed at the beginning of the 1950s when Freud was recognised as one of the leading artistic talents of his generation and even amid the artist's epic oeuvre, ... By: John Rogers, Associated Press

LOS ANGELES, CA (AP).- On the surface it looked like an open-and-shut case: A pair of thieves drop by an art exhibition at the Ritz-Carlton and, while one distracts a curator, the other snatches a valuable, centuries-old Rembrandt drawing and bolts with it. Apparently finding the small pen-and-ink work by the Dutch master too hot to fence, the thieves have second thoughts. They abandon it, undamaged, at a church on the other side of town. Then the real mystery begins. Three weeks after recovering the framed, 11-by-6 inch drawing called "The Judgment," authorities aren't sure whether it really is a Rembrandt or if it even belongs to the art dealer that displayed it with other works at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey. "They have to show us something to prove that they own it, and they haven't been able to do that," ... More

Elefandret is the first public art commission to be on view in the Triangle since 2008.

NEW YORK, N.Y.- Marlborough Gallery announces that the monumental sculpture Gran Elefandret, 2008, by renowned artist Miquel Barceló will be on view at the Union Square Triangle beginning September 13, 2011 through the end of May 2012. It is an honor for the Gallery to bring this monumental bronze sculpture to Union Square, a place that epitomizes New York’s unrivaled energy and serves as both a transportation and cultural bridge between uptown and downtown Manhattan. Barcelo’s immense Gran Elefandret, balances upright on its trunk, its four massive legs outspread searching for equilibrium. At twenty-six feet tall the sculpture brilliantly portrays an extraordinary, if not impossible physical and cultural feat; this contemporary monument believably captures with humor, scale and Spanish courage the essence of what a public monument can be today. To further communicate the gravity-defying feat beyond the s ... More

MUNICH.- The greatest treasures can often be found off the beaten paths. That also accounts for the Special Auction Side lines of the German Avant-garde, which will be held in context of the auction of Modern Art on 28 October. "A lot of works by artists presented in this auction fell victim to World War II and later sank into oblivion. This makes it even more important to put these works, which don't need to hide their light behind renowned names such as Otto Dix, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner or August Macke, into the limelight to a greater extent", thus Robert Ketterer. The intention of the owner of Ketterer Kunst is to draw public attention to artists that have been wrongly forgotten and to thus give them the merits they deserve. With this unusual concept Ketterer Kunst offers artists of both Expressionism and New Objectivity, whose oeuvres were strongly depleted during the Third Reich, their own forum. On the other hand, th ... More

MILWAUKEE, WIS.- The Milwaukee Art Museum has acquired the portrait Alice Hooper, a major colonial American painting by John Singleton Copley (1738–1815). Copley is recognized as one of the great American artists of the day—and one of the first native-born painters to achieve success both at home and abroad. Alice Hooper, painted by Copley around 1763, depicts the seventeen-year-old daughter of the wealthiest man in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Robert “King” Hooper. Alice’s father commissioned this portrait to mark his daughter’s engagement to Jacob Fowle, Jr. “Alice Hooper displays the traits that made Copley desirable in colonial Boston. Copley’s rendering of her fashionable sacque gown dazzles the eye, with its profusion of glinting blue satin and frothy lace spilling from its underdress,” said William Rudolph, ... More

Edgar Allan Poe Museum in Baltimore could close
BALTIMORE (REUTERS).- Of all the cities that claim a connection to the troubled author Edgar Allan Poe, Baltimore likes to think its case is strongest. Poe's family is from Baltimore, his literary career began in the city, he died a mysterious death at a Baltimore hospital and his body was buried here in 1849. But the city that named its NFL team after his poem "The Raven" may soon lose a key physical connection to Poe. The Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum, where the writer lived for four years in the early 1800s, is in danger of closing next year, due to budget cutbacks by the city. "Everyone is tightening their belt," said Jeff Jerome, the museum's curator and only employee, who also works for the city's planning department. Cash-strapped Baltimore stopped funding the museum's $85,000 budget two years ago. It now operates on funds raised privately over recent years. A feasibility study, to be completed by D ... More

Historypin app lets people create a "time machine"
By: Natasha Baker
BANGKOK (REUTERS).- For people who have stood at a monument or scanned a landscape -- the Great Wall of China, for instance, or the U.S. Grand Canyon -- and wondered how it looked 100 or more years ago, there is now an app for you. Historypin, on iOS and Android platforms, strives to create a collection of memories about locations by counting on people to dig up and digitize old photographs and other media of the places, along with personal recollections of the past. Combined with modern pictures and memories, the app creates a story of a place for people to enjoy -- a sort of "time machine in your pocket," its backers say. "It's about people coming together to create a web of human history", said Nick Stanhope, chief executive of
We Are What We Do, a United Kingdom-based non-profit organization responsible for the Historypin project. The app uses GPS to find content that has been added within a certain ... More
