Fall Film Series: Surrealism in Film

Brazil
Friday, September 23 | 8 pm
East Building, Museum Auditorium

Brazil

Our series of surrealist-influenced films continues with Terry Gilliam's Brazil. An original member of the Monty Python comedy ensemble, Gilliam occasionally appeared in sketches but primarily crafted the show's darkly humorous animations. Directing the cult favorite Monty Python and the Holy Grail was just a steppingstone for his roiling imagination. Although Time Bandits, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys, and Heath Ledger's last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, are excellent, Brazil remains his masterpiece.

“A stunning achievement” (Village Voice) and “a superb example of the power of comedy to underscore serious ideas” (New York Times).

Brazil
(1985) Written and directed by Terry Gilliam. Jonathan Pryce, Robert De Niro, Katherine Helmond. (132 min.) R

A meek bureaucrat’s crusade jolts us into a convoluted retro-futuristic nightmare. Gilliam’s dark post-Python comedy looks more modern every year (unfortunately).
Introduced by Devin Orgeron, film studies professor at N.C. State University.
