New Online Course: Art of Game Design

Game BoardFunded by a grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation, the NCMA and N.C. Virtual Public Schools have collaborated to create a new distance-learning course, The Art of Game Design, which will be piloted this fall. This multimedia course teaches the basic elements and thought processes of designing games, both digital (video games) and nondigital (board games, card games, etc.). Topics such as purpose, character and story development, and structure will be explored using works of art from the Museum as catalysts for learning. Students can also enroll in the first course in the collaboration, Videography with a Renaissance Twist. For more information see your school guidance counselor or visit NCVPS.

Rembrandt in America Opens October 30

Self-Portrait, Rembrandt van RijnRembrandt in America is the first major exhibition to explore in depth the collecting history of Rembrandt paintings in America. The exhibition runs October 30, 2011–January 22, 2012. From tours to Drawing with the Masters classes coming in November, there is something for everyone.


Book Your Rembrandt Tour Now!

The Stone Operation, Rembrandt van RijnSchedule your docent-led or self-guided group tours of Rembrandt in America soon, as mornings are already filling up quickly. Tours for groups of up to 60 students begin November 8, 2011, and end January 8, 2012. Admission to the exhibition is free for the reserved number of students plus one adult chaperon per 10 students. Additional adults who accompany the student tour should purchase tickets as soon as the booking is confirmed with the teacher. The group rate for adults is $15 per person. Due to the expected popularity of the exhibition, we cannot guarantee availability. E-mail Jen Coon or call (919) 664-6820 for information and reservations.


New School Tours

Cebolla Church, O'KeeffePlan a field trip this school year to the Museum for a standards-based learning opportunity. Guided school tours reflect the current standards and will reflect the new N.C. Essential Standards and Common Core Standards. They can be tailored to your specific needs. Docent-led tours are free and should be scheduled at least four weeks in advance.

Outreach Project at NCAEA Conference

Lines that Link Humanity, El AnatsuiThe NCMA will present a community outreach project at the N.C. Art Education Association’s Professional Development Conference in Charlotte, October 21–23, 2011. Teachers may register for a 75-minute workshop, “El Anatsui, Contemporary African Artist,” to learn about and possibly participate in a collaborative outreach project for the spring exhibition El Anatsui: When I Last Wrote to You about Africa. The workshop takes place on Saturday, October 22, 9:30–10:45 am. For more information visit the North Carolina Art Education Association Web site.
