Have you ever used a product and exclaimed, "I could design something better than this!" And did you really mean it? If so, you might be a product designer in the making. Product designers are professionals who develop or improve objects we use in our daily lives. Objects like running shoes, backpacks, cell phones and—in the case of recent Saturday High student Lana Vong—foam stickers. Lana, an 11th-grade student at San Gabriel High School, took Introduction to Product Design with Jeffrey B. Jones this past summer and created the concept for Stikitti, a cat-shaped foam sticker maker that instructor Jones calls "a classic example of how product designers have the power to improve the things they love to do." "At first, I thought we'd be learning about marker techniques," says Lana, who said the class introduced her to the three-step product creation process of research, exploration and refinement. "But we ended up focusing more on the thinking and reasoning behind our products. It was almost like solving a math problem." Read Lana's story. Product design is just one of several career options you can explore through Art Center College of Design's Saturday High, a program that helps high school students (grades 9–12) become better artists, designers and thinkers.
