Birds in Art
[description]

In the September issue of Southwest Art, we give you a sneak peek at the Birds in Art exhibition, which opens this Saturday, September 10, at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, WI. Nearly 100 artists are participating in this year's event, including Frank LaLumia, whose watercolor painting titled TAKING FLIGHT: THE BOSQUE DEL APACHE is shown above. He says this painting was inspired by one of his favorite painting venues, the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico. "This piece is an attempt to capture some of that magic: the clacking of the cranes, the cry of the geese, the mass take-offs, the air vibrating with beating wings blotting out the late-afternoon sun—all set in the beautiful Rio Grande Valley, dressed up in her best winter colors," he says.

Members of the Society of Animal Artists gather together next weekend for the 51st annual Art and the Animal exhibition. The event opens on Saturday, September 17, at the Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City, MI. More than 128 works are on display in this year's show, including John Potter's painting GUIDING LIGHT, shown above. "My hope is that the viewer will see the natural world through my eyes and gain an appreciation for the quiet dignity that I find in the wild," he says.
