Fall Film Series

Drunken Angel
Friday, September 24 | 8 p.m.
Museum Auditorium

Drunken Angel

We continue our retrospective of Akira Kurosawa's work with the film he considered the first made exactly as he wanted, without interference from censors of the Japanese military or the American Army of the Occupation. Critics considered it the artistic equivalent of an Italian neorealistic film, like Bicycle Thieves, and lead actor Toshiro Mifune's performance as explosive as Marlon Brando's onstage in A Streetcar Named Desire.

Drunken Angel
(1948) Directed by Akira Kurosawa. Takashi Shimura, Toshiro Mifune, Reizaburo Yamamoto. (98 min.)

An alcoholic physician laboring in a postwar Tokyo slum treats a volatile gangster, fatally ill with TB. Kurosawa and Mifune’s first collaboration is this unforgettable film noir, set amid a squalid urban swamp symbolizing Japan’s national despair. “I wanted to take a scalpel and dissect the yakuza [crime syndicate].”—Akira Kurosawa
