SEATTLE (AP).- A traveling exhibition of essential works from Pablo Picasso's personal collection is making its U.S. debut this week. "Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musee National Picasso, Paris" will include paintings, drawings, sculptures and etchings by the artist and serves as a retrospective covering each notable artistic period of his eight-decade career. Alex Nyerges, director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the tour's second U.S. stop, said that Picasso's personal collection contained works the artist consciously chose to shape his artistic legacy, "and he was not a modest man." The touring exhibit was made possible because the Paris museum is undergoing a $28 million renovation that won't be complete until 2012. U.S. showings will take place Friday through Jan. 17 at the Seattle Art Museum; Feb. 19 through May 15 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; and June 11 through Sept. 18 at the Fine Arts Museums ... LONDON.- American painter, sculptor and printmaker Tom Wesselmann (1931-2004) is widely regarded as one of the leading figures of American Pop Art. Haunch of Venison London presents 'Tom Wesselmann: Works 1958-2004', the most extensive exhibition of his work to date in the UK. Spanning four decades, the show will examine the evolution of Wesselmann's style, revealing his openness to a range of subject matter, scale and media. Tom Wesselmann had planned to become a cartoonist but, while a student at the Cooper Union, the powerful work of Willem de Kooning provided both inspiration and inhibition as he attempted to find a new direction centred around a tangible subject.   The Hand of God? Strange Phenomenon at Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery

Surprised visitors say they have seen the reflection of a hand pointing directly at the Messiah in Mattia Preti’s 1660 work 'The Adoration of the Shepherds.'

LIVERPOOL.- A 350-year-old painting of the baby Jesus is at the centre of a bizarre optical illusion at Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery. Surprised visitors say they have seen the reflection of a hand pointing directly at the Messiah in Mattia Preti’s 1660 work 'The Adoration of the Shepherds.' The painting depicts onlookers surrounding the holy child. The strange phenomenon occurred when the John Moores Painting Prize exhibition opened last month. One of the works, 'THERE YOU ARE!' by Cornelia Baltes, features a large hand painted onto the walls of the Walker. By some complete fluke this painted hand seems to have reflected through glass doors and onto the Preti painting – even though it’s in a completely different gallery. Reyahn King, Director of Art Galleries, said: “This is an uncanny thing to have happened. We have a painting in the John Moores exhibition which is now reflecting onto ... More

Important Italian Plate Serves Up Success at Freeman's
PHILADELPHIA, PA.- Late Wednesday evening, Freeman's received a call for a special private viewing from a Parisian who had flown over to see Italian maiolica istoriata dish, measuring only 10 1/8th inch in diameter. The plate was sourced by a Freeman's specialist in Charlottesville, Virginia, who worked with a private client who came to own the piece through family legacy. The plate was originally purchased by his grandfather, years ago, while travelling through Italy. Rob Waterhouse, Head of the English & Continental Department, was delighted with the entire Fine English & Contemporary Furniture, Silver, and Decorative Arts - including Oriental Rugs auction, commenting, "Once again, Freeman's has established itself as a leader in the ... Weekend Search may Help Map Civil War Site in Missouri
ST. LOUIS (AP).- One of the nation's leading battlefield archaeologists fanned out with volunteers in central Missouri Friday in hopes of pinpointing the exact spot of a Civil War battle that ended one of the divisive war's most famous and longest raids. Those involved say the search could be a boon for Missouri's quest to draw in Civil War buffs as the 150th anniversary of the divisive conflict between the North and South fast approaches. Led by forensic archaeologist Doug Scott, they hope to find bullets, pieces of horse harnesses and other evidence from the 1863 Battle of Marshall — a skirmish that happened 147 years ago next Wednesday. Missouri's place in the war is undeniable: The state trails only Virginia and Tennessee in the number of Civil War battles fought. Those states, along with Pennsylvania, have been savvy in erecting battlefield monuments that lure thousands of visitors each year, boosting their tourism revenues. As anniversary observances of the war loom, "ever ... More
