NEW YORK (AP).- A 6-foot Henri Matisse bronze of a nude woman seen from behind has been sold for over $48 million in New York City, a record auction price for the artist's work. Christie's says "Back IV" was purchased Wednesday by Gagosian Gallery Inc. The price included the buyer's premium. It had been estimated to bring $25 million to $35 million. Matisse created a series of four of the bronze reliefs, what some consider his most ambitious sculptural work. He worked on them between 1908 and 1931. The singular motif of the works is a woman leaning against a wall. She's seen from behind. Major museums have complete sets, including New York's Museum of Modern Art. Christie's said it was the first time that one of the colossal bronzes was brought to auction. ... More | | Egon Schiele Painting 'Procession' for Sale at Im Kinsky Kunst Auktionen in Vienna

RENOIR, curated by gallery President and Director Howard Shaw, focuses on the second half of Renoir's dynamic sixty year long career, a productive, yet often overlooked period, recently the subject of a major exhibition, Renoir in the 20th Century (Grand Palais, Paris; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, PA; 2009-2010). BASEL.- Under Destruction is a group exhibition, featuring twenty internationally known contemporary artists, that examines the use and role of destruction in contemporary art. Fifty years after Jean Tinguely's historic Homage to New York (1960) the present exhibition proposes a series of alternative approaches to a theme traditionally associated with the more spectacular and inherently protest-oriented work of Jean Tinguely, Gustav Metzger and others in the 50s and 60s. "If nothing can be created, something must be destroyed", is how Rosalind Krauss succinctly summarized Georges Bataille's La part maudite (The Accursed Share, 1949). While this phrase can basically describe the ethos of Under Destruction, the exhibition raises the stakes normally linked with such a deleterious theme. Not only does it explore the various modes of destruction in art, but, more importantly, it also addresses to what ends it is implemented. Indeed, the exhibition reflects on the subject ... LONDON.- Christies announce that they will offer an exceptionally rare and beautiful depiction of the lost palace of Nonsuch at the auction of Old Masters and 19th Century Art on 7 December 2010. Commissioned by King Henry VIII in order to outshine the great palaces built by his rival King François I of France, the building of Nonsuch Palace began in 1538 and took 8 years to complete. It stood for less than 150 years having fallen into disrepair in the 1680s. The earliest and most important contemporary depiction of Britains most ambitious Renaissance commission, the present drawing is an extremely valuable record of the lost palace and has been seen in public only twice before; at Sutton Place in 1983 and at The National Gallery, Washington, in 1986. Described by Martin Biddle as the only surviving impression of what Nonsuch really looked like, it is expected to realise £800,0 ... LONDON (REUTERS).- Britain has temporarily halted the export of a record-breaking painting by English master J.M.W. Turner which was sold at auction in July for 29.7 million pounds ($48 million). "Modern Rome -- Campo Vaccino" went under the hammer at Sotheby's in London and set an auction record for the artist. The 1839 landscape was Turner's last painting of Rome. Culture Minister Ed Vaizey announced the decision on Wednesday, and gave individuals and organizations until February 2, 2011 to demonstrate serious intent to keep the masterpiece in the country by meeting its market value. If it appears to be a real possibility that the funds can be raised, the deadline will be extended to August 2 next year, he said in a statement. His decision follows a recommendation from the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest, administered by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA). This exhibition marks the first time work by a single artist has occupied the entire gallery space, including both the main gallery and the Front Room. The Autumn Buffalo series, conceived as a symphonic suite with a succession of calm and fast movements, has a scale and pictorial bravura that immediately sets it apart. Hesidences work does not rely on nostalgia, visual culture, nor pay ironic tribute to artists of admiration. Rather, Hesidence locates information through a concentrated process of creation, forming an elusive space that takes the viewer beyond a definable language. Like the highly improvisational and gestural European Art Informel, his paintings are uncompromising, wild, and aggressive.
