NEW YORK (AP).- The social realist artist Jack Levine, who skewered the rich and powerful in paintings that echoed Old Masters like Goya and El Greco stylistically, has died. He was 95. Levine's son-in-law, Leonard Fisher, said the artist died Monday at his New York City home. Levine's works are in the collections of major museums including the Art Institute of Chicago, New York's Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. He achieved wide recognition when his 1937 painting "The Feast of Pure Reason," a critique of political corruption, was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art. Levine's career was interrupted by a stint in the Army from 1942 to 1945. After the war he married artist Ruth Gikow and moved to New York. PHILADELPHIA (AP).- It's not typical for a loading dock to be the celebrated subject of a groundbreaking ceremony, but Frank Gehry is not your typical architect. Gehry joined more than 100 dignitaries, philanthropists and art aficionados Tuesday at the The Philadelphia Museum of Art to mark the start of construction on his 68,000-square-foot, $81 million underground utility space. Museum officials said the new space will provide much needed improvements for the care and storage of art works and will make deliveries simpler from food to fine art. More important to visitors, it will return a vaulted walkway that runs through the length of the museum and has been used for shipping and receiving since the 1970s to its original purpose as a street-level visitor entrance. The "loading dock" is expected to be completed in 2012. After that, planning will begin on a vast underground gallery, also designed by G ... Fresh from the critical success of his recent solo exhibition Inanimate Life at our Chelsea gallery, artist Jay Heikes engages in a contemporary dialogue with Boetti. LONDON.- Agnews Gallery presents its fifth exhibition of the work of Andrew Gadd, The Day Begins. The exhibition sees Gadd further developing his themes of isolation and social brutality, yet it also presents an exploration of new subject matter. A quartet of religious pictures, for instance, was developed out of a commission from the Churches Advertising Network to produce an image that appeared in bus shelters across the country in 2008. The resulting composition, Gadds hauntingly beautiful Bus Stop Nativity which depicts the Holy Family huddled in a bus shelter, serves as an appropriately bleak twenty-first century urban alternative to the traditional stable narrative. The Day Begins also includes several Cubist-inspired meditations on cityscapes and abstract concepts. This is Gadd engaging with a very different pictorial language, and represents a significant stylistic departure for the artis ... The cause of the blaze is under investigation although it did not appear to be suspicious, officials said.
