What factors in your life do you believe played a significant part in you becoming an artist ? Art at school, biology drawings… I realised I could draw and loved it. And having a good imagination. What processes (physical and mental) do you tend to follow when creating a new piece of art ? A new piece of artwork is a mental process. It can take days or weeks. Images appear and sometimes you think more about it or put it to the back of your mind. I find that the best time for thinking up new creations is an hour before I fall asleep. I believe that images choose themselves through the subconscious… they carry a message that relates to what I am trying to say. Where do you seek inspiration for your art; what inspires you ? My work is often autobiographical. Life Happens and is depicted on canvas in a round about way. My first solo show "Creative Journeys, 2008" discussed my journey to New Zealand in 1999. A three month sailing trip from Cape Town to Gibraltar and a Kiwi was what eventually brought me to the Waikato. "If Godwits couldn't fly, 2009" was about settling down, belonging and being able to love and adopt two countries. "Three Birds and a Feather, 2010" , discussed relationship breakdowns and new beginnings. Birds seem to be a popular subject at the moment. But I also have personal self symbols, like the chair and the moon or lily. The natural world is a great source of inspiration. What is your favourite colour and why ? Turquoise Blue. It is a beautiful colour by itself, but mixes so well with umbers and ochre's, even yellows, to create vibrant greens. I just love it. What is your favourite creative tool ? It has to be a paintbrush… Why is art an important part of our everyday lives ? Because it gives purpose to our everyday lives. Art brings people together. It is part of our culture and our belonging. It reflects our psyche. You understand an era through the creative industries like music, architecture, fashion, fine arts, literature and culinary. What the ancient peoples have left behind, is such a great indication of how important the Arts are in our world, from cave drawings to masterpieces and ancient buildings and structures. I am inspired to enter some competitions over the next 12 months and maybe a few more shows. Building up some stock is a high priority. If you were not an artist, what would you be ? A florist or a destination café/ gallery business. It would have to be something creative. Hairdressing too! What makes you laugh out loud ? When I visualise a joke and the image and words come together. The quirky comments from my children! If you could make one rule for the world, what would it be ? No one in the world should pay GST on Food. My idea of a perfect Sunday is... ? Sleep in until 9 and a yummie breakfast. Go out for a bike ride with the kids. A big walk in the bush or go to the beach. A lazy Sunday BBQ lunch that flows into dinner! Family and Sundays go together really well! |
