ROME.- Sixteen paintings that had been stolen at various times from private homes and churches will be back by Christmas, to their rightful owners. The works of art seized by police in September for the protection of cultural heritage have been recovered from the house of a Roman designer and 'at large were reported stolen to the public prosecutor of Rome. In his house were found and photographed 180 paintings from various periods, purchased in markets and fairs across Italy, during a period of over 30 years. The investigation''- said Lt. Col. Raffaele Mancino - 'started by the request of a collector from Rome, who wanted to buy a painting by the Sienese school of the fifteenth century, and it was' directed to this department to verify the legal origin''. Having established that the painting of the 'Suicide of Cleopatra' was included in the database with the command of unlawfully removed cultural property, started off the investigation. ... More

Los Angeles County Museum of Art Presents the First Museum Exhibition of Artist Steve Wolfe

Untitled (Study for Stories of Atists & Writers), 1997-1998. Pencil and screenprint on paper, 13 x 10 in. Collection of Gail and Tony Ganz. © 2009 Steve Wolfe.

LAS ANGELES, CA.- —The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents Steve Wolfe on Paper, the first solo museum exhibition of artist Steve Wolfe. For the last twenty years, Wolfe has created objects and drawings of astounding craft and visual presence that explore the intersections between material culture, intellectual history, and personal and collective memory. The exhibition focuses on works on paper—some that are purely drawn, but most of which combine aspects of drawing, painting, collage and printmaking. The title, Steve Wolfe on Paper, selected by Wolfe himself, refers to the artist’s technique and subject (Wolfe’s work often depicts paper in the form of books) and to his commitment to the material and the handmade, a particularly compelling issue given the current endangered status of the printed word. LACMA’s presentation—the final stop on the exhibition’s national tour—is ... More

Sculptures and Photographs by Anthony Pearson at David Kordansky Gallery

LOS ANGELES, CA.- David Kordansky Gallery presents an exhibition of new work by Anthony Pearson. The exhibition will run through February 5, 2011. Anthony Pearson's sculptures and photographs are, on the one hand, records of a studio practice dedicated to non-representational mark-making and the pursuit of free aesthetic movement; on the other, they are the elements of a vocabulary designed to systematize the irrational and inexplicable facets of artistic endeavor. This oscillation between generative and curatorial instincts is manifest in the solarized silver gelatin prints that form one of the central aspects of Pearson's work. These unique prints are photographs of ink drawings on foil: images, in essence, of hand-drawn marks that have been mediated by the optical and chemical processes of photography. By arranging them in sets or pairing them with sculptural works, Pearson distances himself even further from ... More

Merseyside Maritime Museum's Sailortown Project: Casting Light on Vanished World

Much of Liverpool’s seafaring areas were clustered around the city centre, inland from the Albert, Canning and Salthouse Docks.

LIVERPOOL.- People have been recalling their memories of Liverpool’s once-vibrant seafaring district in a study linked to Merseyside Maritime Museum displays. Historians, museum curators and film-makers are collaborating on the Mapping Memory of the Waterfront project. Many years ago all ports had a Sailortown where mariners relaxed, shopped and did business. Liverpool’s extended behind the docks and was finally swept away in the 1970s with the arrival of containerisation. For centuries ships spent several days in port while cargoes were loaded and unloaded. This gave crews the chance to visit their haunts ashore. Since the introduction of roll-on / roll-off, vessels spend less time in port and the ship’s company are unlikely to go ashore.
