PARIS.- A month after the launch of the campaign to acquire Lucas Cranach’s Three Graces, the Louvre has raised 1 million euros from over 5000 donors. This enabled Lucas Cranach’s Three Graces to enter into the Louvre’s collections. The Louvre would like to thank all those who have taken part in this extraordinary successful campaign! On November 13, the Louvre museum launched a fundraising campaign to acquire The Three Graces by Lucas Cranach. This small oil on wood painting shows three female nudes painted with stunning sensuality and finesse. This masterpiece has been confined to private collections since it was painted in 1531. Astonishing in its technical perfection and because of its remarkable condition, The Three Graces has earned the status of a Trésor national, which entitles the Louvre to the right of first refusal for acquiring the work for its collection until the end of January 2011. The sale was led by a Märklin “Lusitania” Ocean Liner that sold for $194,500, a new auction record for a toy boat. The toy had previously held the record when it was purchased by Mr. Forbes at Sotheby’s New York in 1983 for $28,600. Also drawing interest from several bidders was an Exotic Clockwork Gunboat Attributed to Märklin /Rock and Graner which achieved $134,500. NEW YORK, NY.- Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) is generally acknowledged to be the greatest draftsman of the twentieth century. The Frick Collection, New York, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., have co-organized an exhibition for 2011–12 that will look at the dazzling development of Picasso’s drawings, from the precocious academic exercises of his youth in the 1890s to the virtuoso classical works of the early 1920s. Through a selection of more than fifty works at each venue, the presentation will examine the artist’s stylistic experiments and techniques in this roughly thirty-year period, which begins and ends in a classical mode and encompasses the radical innovations of Cubism and collage. The show will demonstrate how drawing served as an essential means of invention and discovery in Picasso’s multifaceted art, while its centrality in his v ... More

By: Jamey Keaten, Associated Press

PARIS (AP).- Administrators of France's Versailles Palace said Friday that they have agreed to lease an adjacent building to King Louis XIV's 17th-century chateau for use as a hotel. The Hotel du Grand Controle, which was the home for financial advisers to French kings for decades, will be getting a €5.5-million ($7.3-million), yearlong facelift by Belgian company Ivy International as part of a deal concluded in recent weeks. The 23-room hotel, with views of the palace's Orangerie garden, will open in late 2011. The building previously belonged to the Defense Ministry — which used it as an officers' mess hall — and it later fell into disrepair. Versailles managers are granting a 30-year operating lease to Ivy. The deficit-plagued French government has been looking for ways to make money out of state-owned ... More

Barthélémy Toguo, Circumcision 3, 2007.

BELLINZONA.- The exhibition entitled MUTATIONS, currently on view until the 6th February 2011, is a double solo show. It was inaugurated at the CACT Centre of Contemporary Art in Canton Ticino on 27 November. The artists involved are Martin Sulzer (Germany, 1977) and Barthélémy Toguo (Cameroon-France, 1967). Apparently different in terms of the idioms they use, they reveal points of contact in the topic proposed by the curator, applying contemporary stylistic elements and themes. For some time now, Martin Sulzer has been concentrating his work mainly on how artistic expression relates to technology, revitalising as his dominant theme the language that expresses the body and is expressed by it. This the artist, who live and works in Berlin, develops through the dynamics of experiencing his own definition in the image society. It is actually his frenzied output and exploitation of visual representations that mak ... More

AUSTIN, TX.- The Austin Museum of Art celebrates the national significance and aesthetic richness of Austin’s premier fine art publisher . Twenty Years of Printmaking at Flatbed Press showcases the significant role that original prints play in the work of today's artists. Since the 1960s, contemporary prints have rivaled paintings in aesthetic quality, scale, and technical ambition. Many of the printmaking methods artists currently use date to the Renaissance or earlier. Digital technology and new materials, however, have prompted technical innovation and expanded creative options, bringing fresh vision to a venerable medium ... More

Modern Art Oxford Presents a Solo Exhibition of New and Recent Sculptures by British Artist Thomas Houseago
OXFORD.- This autumn, Modern Art Oxford presents new and recent sculptures by British artist Thomas Houseago in his first major solo exhibition in a UK public gallery. Houseago has come to prominence in recent years with his monumental, figurative sculptures that are charged with a remarkable energy and vitality. Houseago works primarily with materials associated with classical and modernist sculpture; carved wood, plaster and bronze. His somewhat crude and direct working belies a sophistication that is rich in a layering of cultural, mythological and art historical references. In a time of fast-paced technological change, Houseago’s art takes on the role of an awkward, unresolved reminder of the past. Alongside his exhibition at Modern Art Oxford, Houseago presents a number of sculptures in the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology. These pieces will be ... More

BERLIN.- Wagner + Partner Galerie present the Miklos Gaál: Selbstvergessenheit exhibition now on view through Feb. 12, 2010. The exhibition title refers to the mental state of immersion, void of directed and intentional thought but being open to the surroundings as an undifferentiated whole. The exhibition is a collection of singular works from recent years including photographic prints, a hand printed artist book, a slide show and a silkscreen series that make up a playground in which the viewer’s relationship to photography is placed in the foreground. Viewing an Apple Tree is a silkscreen-printed artist book displaying a singular photograph of a blossoming tree. The source image is divided in sections of the same size and ... More
