Move Beyond Realism As artist Brian Ryder describes, there are so many ways to get inspiration for abstract paintings--from emotions, feelings, recollections, people or places you've seen. In this week's artistsnetwork.tv video, Beyond Realism with Brian Ryder, Part 2, you'll start with pen-and-wash and then oil sketches to investigate shapes and possibilities, to capture whatever it is that attracts you to your subject. These initial sketches will help reinforce your ideas about the composition. Then move onto a larger canvas to complete a finished abstract painting step by step, using acrylics and some oil pastel with focus on texture, color, shape and composition for a dramatic final piece. In this preview from Beyond Realism Part 2, Brian leads you through several watercolor sketches of the landscape, moving more and more toward the abstract with each new sketch, demonstrating how to move beyond realism in preparation for a finished abstract painting using acrylic and oil pastel.
Lifelike Drawing in Colored Pencil In case you missed last week's artistsnetwork.tv video worskhop, Lee Hammond's Lifelike Drawing in Colored Pencil teaches you the best materials to use, then shows you how to perfect layering and burnishing techniques for super, realistic effects. Lee demonstrates how to draw a variety of subjectsvase, butterfly, hibiscusbuilding new skills with each, from achieving the smooth transitions of a spherical vase, to the overlapping edges and intense colors of a butterfly's wings, to the delicate layers and overlaps of flower petals.
