LONDON.- This retrospective of the leading Mexican artist Gabriel Orozco (b 1962) is the largest presentation of his most critically acclaimed works in the UK. The exhibition by Gabriel Orozco is on display until April 11, 2011 at the Tate Modern. A sculptor of global significance, Orozco draws on the histories of western and Latin American art practice with limitless innovation and experimentation. TOLEDO, OH.- A rediscovered painting by Dutch artist Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (16061669), on loan at the The Toledo Museum of Art, will be displayed for several months beginning January 28 in Gallery 24. The artist painted the small oil-on-copper self portrait, Rembrandt Laughing, in his native city of Leiden when he was just 21 or 22 years old. This is one of the most exciting artistic rediscoveries in recent years, said Museum Director Brian Kennedy. Rembrandt Laughing is one of the first and most joyful examples of the artists autobiography in paint. A century and a half after Rembrandts death, the portrait was mistakenly thought to be by his older contemporary Frans Hals, and it was reproduced as Halss work in an engraving. Some scholars of the 20th century realized it was ... More | | Kai Althoff's Punkt, Absatz, Bluemli (period, paragraph, Bluemli) at Gladstone Gallery

NEW YORK, NY.- Someone who saw the work said the following: "The images herein depict mundane and fantastic situations enacted by human and animal souls, figures ill and ecstatic about the situations they have been granted. Some figures cannot help but stare or grab at each other, while others step on their companions, soiling any hope of communion. Their wills, like twisted wicks, burn distinct but unified fires. They are composed of several species but they cannot tell themselves apart, awakening loathsome blood in the veins of each body. With sycophantic excitement they conduct every modern day sacramentmurder, construction, commerce, and hygiene (among others). Yet their tangled wills act not in the name of altruism or holiness, but from their everlasting yearning for lifes sweet spots and the age-old wish to dissociate from ... NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ.- On Friday, January 14, 2011, the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University handed over a rare early 16th-century portrait by the German artist Hans Baldung Grien to Simon Goodman, the Los Angeles-based grandson of Friedrich and Louise Gutmann, Holocaust victims and previous owners of the painting. In a visit to the Zimmerli, Mr. Goodman accepted Portrait of a Young Man (1509) on behalf of the Gutmann/Goodman heirs. Since 1946, the Gutmann/Goodman family has been looking for this particular painting by Baldung Grien (c. 14841545), long considered the most gifted of the followers of Albrecht Dürer. Although many of the familys artworks have been successfully recovered, this painting eluded both the family and the governments of France, the Netherlands, and West Germany. NEW YORK, NY.- Jan van Eycks Ghent Altarpiece is, without any question, one of the most important paintings ever made. Finished in 1432, it was the first piece to demonstrate the astounding versatility of oil painting, which would become the preferred medium by painters for 500 years. Astonishingly, it is also the most desired artwork of all time. Since its completion in 1432, this twelve-panel oil painting has been the victim of thirteen separate crimes, including seven separate thefts; it has been looted in three different wars, burned, forged, smuggled, illegally sold, hidden, hunted by Napoleon and then the Nazis, ransomed, and rescued by Austrian double-agents. (The runner-up, a portrait by Rembrandt, has been stolen only four times.) In STEALING THE MYSTIC LAMB, leading art crime expert Noah Charney chronicles the larger-than-life story of The Ghent Altarpieces 600 years of near constant movement and explores what drove so many to desire this artwork above all ...
