Peyton Place

Reportedly one out of every 37 Americans bought a copy of Grace Metalious's Peyton Place at a time when most first novels sold only about 2,000 copies. Why? You probably know already. The small-town scandals were described in juicy prose that was sanitized for the screen, but Peyton Place was still the top grossing film of 1957 and got nine Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for Lana Turner.

Peyton Place
(1957) Directed by Mark Robson. Lana Turner, Diane Varsi, Hope Lange. (150 min.)

Behind the neat picket fences of a placid New England town lurk tawdry secrets. The shocking bestseller revealed a picture-perfect village concealing adultery, rape, incest, and murder, along with more conventionally unruly passions. The censored film version only thinly veils subjects considered taboo in midcentury America. Fox Archive print.
