Join us for a few refreshments and a lot of stimulating conversation about the Museum’s new exhibition of British portraiture, Thomas Gainsborough and the Modern Woman. This symposium brings together top scholars to examine the importance of Thomas Gainsborough, his immense impact on ideas of painting, the salacious biographies of the women he painted, and the reasons why his art is still so compelling 250 years later.

Presenters include:
Ann Bermingham, Professor of Art History at U.C. Santa Barbara, on Gainsborough’s Daughters
Melinda McCurdy, Associate Curator of European Art at The Huntington Art Collection, presenting The Wench of the Week? Transgressive Identity in Gainsborough’s Portrait of Penelope Ligonier
John Wilson, Director of the Timken Museum of Art
Julia Marciari-Alexander, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs at The San Diego Museum of Art

The conversation will be moderated by John Marciari, Curator of European Art and Head of Provenance Research at The San Diego Museum of Art.
