Basin (Tsukubai)
2000
On view in Gallery 31, Contemplative Alcove
http://www.imakenews.com/eletra/go.cfm?z=asianart%2C508919%2CbkN4PDSW%2C4766049%2CbjgVmBK

The basin in our contemplative alcove is made from a Japanese basalt boulder with a rugged, oxidized brown surface. Sliced in half, it reveals a dark, marblelike core, which was polished by with water and a whetstone for months until it achieved a mirrorlike smoothness. The extremely slow movement of the water on the surface gives an illusion of stillness and a lustrous black surface. Izumi Masatoshi was a long-time protege and collaborator of the famous sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988).

The most compelling, politically engaged documentary cinema in the world right now is coming from China. Under the radar, with
low/no budgets and little/no hope of their work being shown in their own country, filmmakers are using inexpensive digital technology to tell stories. It is a deeply committed cinema, often depicting human rights abuses, stories of chaos and neglect, and of state-sanctioned deception.
