MADRID.- "The Virgin and Child with Repentant Sinners" was not a copy of Van Dyck and did not deserve to be in the basement of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. This is a genuine Van Dyck from 1625, the institution took it out of storage today after many years. The work was included in the 1964 inventory of the Academy as "an old copy of Van Dyck. "Once the painting was cleaned and restored, the authenticity of the work of art has been confirmed according to a press release from the institution released today. The director of the Academy, Antonio Bonet Correa, appeared before the press to present the work with the teacher and researcher of History of Art and former curator of the Museo del Prado, Matías Díaz Padrón. The attribution to Van Dyck is "no longer in doubt, said the Royal Academy. ... More | | | Sylvie Fleury Brings Luxury and Glamour to the Contemporary Art Center of Málaga

MALAGA.- The Contemporary Art Center of Málaga, in collaboration with the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, is presenting the first exhibition in Spain of the Swiss artist, Sylvie Fleury. It comprises a survey of her output over the last 20 years and will allow the visitor to see some of her most important works through which she offers an ironic vision of consumer culture and the angst that prevails in contemporary society. Sculptures, murals, videos and neons constitute the key pieces in a comprehensive display of works which demonstrates that nothing is what it seems while revealing the most destructive side of present-day aspirations. The artist guides the viewer through the world of fashion, luxury and leading brand names, using the vehicle of art to criticise the superficiality of a capricious, dissatisfied world. The prevailing angst in contemporary society, which arises from a popular culture that primarily focuses on mat ... More | | Regional Unrest Inspires Artists at Dubai's Four-Day Contemporary Art Show

DUBAI (REUTERS).- Stirring canvasses inspired by the unrest sweeping the Arab world feature in a four-day contemporary art show, Art Dubai, running this week through Saturday. Most of the artists from Artspace Gallery in the Dubai International Financial Center were in Egypt during the uprising that brought down veteran ruler Hosni Mubarak and many had been unsure if their pieces would be completed in time. Their work is a testament to freedom of expression and the spirit of revolution, said the gallery's Sossy Dikijian. "In the Middle East, there's a lot of censorship in art. There's not a sense of freedom, and we felt we needed to put a statement out there," he said. "We had to do something that really reflected 'now.'" This, the fifth annual fair, is the most geographically diverse yet. The number of galleries ... More | | Robert De Niro Testifies in Gallery Owner Lawrence Salander-Related Art Fraud Trial

NEW YORK (AP).- It's a role that moviegoers might not know Robert De Niro plays: overseeing his painter father's estate. The Academy Award-winning actor served as a star witness Friday in an art-fraud trial, testifying against a former gallery director accused of selling some of the late Robert De Niro Sr.'s works without paying his family its share. Seeming as self-assured on the witness stand as his characters are on screen, De Niro told jurors about his family's dealings with the now-shuttered Salander-O'Reilly Galleries LLC, giving detailed answers and drawing laughs at times from a courtroom packed with reporters and onlookers. But overall, he told a story of coming to doubt an art dealer he'd trusted and considered a friend. "I wasn't watching as carefully as I probably should have" early in the estate's involvement with gallery owner Lawrence Salander," De Niro said. But "I trusted Larry implicitly. I thought that anything that he did, it was going to be good. ... More | | Christie's in New York to Sell Photographs from the Consolidated Freightways Collection

NEW YORK, N.Y. (AP).- A century ago, Sonia Delaunay and her husband, Robert, were brash young innovators in the avant-garde art world of Paris, exploring the idea that contrasting colors could be used to create a sense of movement and rhythm in art. Sonia, who was intent on merging art and everyday life, applied this principle of "simultaneity" (color suggesting motion) to clothing, which naturally moves and flows with the body. She says she realized the potential of fabric in 1911, when she made a patchwork quilt for her newborn son and saw that it evoked the abstract patterns of cubist art. In the next decade, she began making dresses in bold, geometric patterns that expressed the artistic ideas her husband was working out in paint on canvas. Her unusual ability to merge fine art with fashion marked the ... More | | A Very Rare Rhinoceros Horn Cup From China, Sold at Hotel des Ventes in Geneva for a Record Price

More Bidder Pays $460K for Roughly 8-Pound Gold Nugget SACRAMENTO (AP).- A bidder has paid $460,000 for a roughly 8-pound gold nugget found in Northern California's Gold Rush country. Spectrum Numismatics came away with the nugget on Wednesday after a feverish two minutes of bidding at the Golden West Auction in Sacramento. The company was bidding on behalf of an anonymous buyer. What may be the biggest California gold nugget in existence was found in the unincorporated town of Washington in Nevada County last March with a metal detector. At current gold prices, the nugget would have fetched less than $138,000. But auctioneers say its connection to the 19th century Gold Rush helped boost its value. More Bubble Trouble Spoils China's "Art Shares" PartyBEIJING (REUTERS).- China's maiden "art stock exchange" has halted trade in its top two paintings after their share prices soared 1,700 percent and ignited concerns that a new bubble was bursting. Just two months after the Tianjin Cultural Artwork Exchange listed shares in two Chinese paintings, the bourse said it was pulling the paintings from trade to "reduce investment risks and protect investor rights." Wild asset price swings are not uncommon in China, where markets are often dominated by ordinary people who have few viable investment channels and earn little, if any, interest on bank deposits. In the past three years alone, items as varied as garlic, mung beans and ant-based aphrodisiacs have all experienced investment frenzies. The Chinese art market was also seen by many critics as a bubble in 2008 when auction prices soared. But the boom in art shares was something entirely new. The Tianjin art exchange, which opened in January, operates by listing works of art and then ...
