When artists root their work in the social encounter, the documentary mode plays a central role in mediating events and experiences. Though the resulting material often bears a close resemblance to ethnographic mapping, investigative journalism or even community work, many of today's artists operate in somewhat murkier waters. Working outside - or even deliberately corrupting - accepted conventions and frameworks, the artists participating in this two-part exhibition find alternative means to engage with social realities in situations of war, sex and political urgency.

Calude CahunClaude Cahun | Sue Tompkins
Inverleith House

Until Sunday 17 April

Inverleith House is delighted to present two exhibitions; one featuring new work by Sue Tompkins and a retrospective on Claude Cahun (1884- 1954). Sue Tompkins is a sound and visual artist whose work for Inverleith House takes the form of live performance, typewritten text pieces and fabric works. Each element of her work is linked by the repetitive, performative actions that are utilised in their production.
On the first floor is the first UK museum survey of photographs by Claude Cahun (1894-1954). A writer, photographer, actress and political activist, Claude Cahun's remarkable legacy is a photographic archive which provides a compelling and vivid document of a most unusual life, one that despite its distance from that of a modern day viewer seems to uncannily and unflinchingly echo today's concerns.

Edinburgh Visual Arts and Crafts Exhibition

Closing date: Monday 14 March

In 2000, the City of Edinburgh Council, in partnership with the Scottish Arts Council (now Creative Scotland) launched a scheme of funding to support individual artists and makers based in the city.  Formerly known as the Edinburgh Visual Arts and Crafts Award Scheme (EVAAC), the Visual Arts Awards: Edinburgh (VAA) and Craft Maker Awards: Edinburgh (CMA) schemes have supported over 200 proposals to develop new work and creative practice.

To celebrate the ongoing success of these schemes, the City of Edinburgh Council's Culture and Sport Division will present an exhibition highlighting some of the supported individuals and their work at the City Art Centre from November 2011 to February 2012.

To qualify for selection, artists and makers must have received funding between the financial years 2000/01 and 2009/10 from at least one of the following schemes - Edinburgh Visual Arts and Crafts Award (EVAAC), Visual Arts Awards: Edinburgh (VAA) and/or Craft Maker Awards: Edinburgh (CMA).  Funded projects must have concluded and a final report submitted to and approved by the scheme administrator.

To request an application package, or to discuss the opportunity further, please contact Tracy Scodellaro, Arts Officer, on 0131 529 6720 or at tracy.scodellaro@edinburgh.gov.uk.
