1839 - A Gothic Adventure

video pictureThis exhibition springs from the Dick Institute’s acquisition in 2009 of a remarkable group of watercolours by James Henry Nixon recording the cavalcades, jousting, combat and feasting at the Eglinton Tournament, a gothic extravaganza staged by the youthful Earl of Eglinton in 1839 at his ancestral castle in Ayrshire, south west Scotland.The event attracted an estimated 100,000 people who travelled by newly invented trains and steam ships to witness an “authentic” medieval tournament ....
