BERLIN.- Arndt presents the second solo exhibition with Gilbert & George featuring the new series The Urethra Postcard Art. In 2009, nearly four decades after their first exhibition of POSTCARD ART, and twenty years since their last group of pictures to be made in the medium of postcards, Gilbert & George returned to the form to make the epic and dazzling group of 564 new pieces that comprise The Urethra Postcard Pictures. This is the single largest group of art works made by Gilbert & George, and in turn comprises seven individual groups of new Postcard Pictures. Arndt will exhibit 52 of these works. The art of Gilbert & George has always described, with utmost clarity, poignancy and intensity, the unifying experiences of being alive in the modern world. The artists have addressed those subjects that are seldom considered within the language and focus of contemporary art and culture: that which is lowly, discarded, hidden ... More

An Exceptional Silver Drinking Cup Made Around 1180 to Be Sold at Sotheby's

A silver cup on foot, circa 1180, probably France. Est.300.000-400.000€. Photo: Sotheby's/ ArtDigital Studio.

PARIS.- Sotheby's sale of Important European Silver, Gold Boxes & Objects Vertu in Paris on May 17 will include an exceptional silver drinking cup made around 1180, probably in France (estimate €300,000–400,000*). No public or private collection holds a piece of such age and with this specific iconography. The cup's decoration is spangled with astral symbols. The eight-branch star, the two circles around the basilisk, and the moon-like shapes evoke scientific works of the early medieval period, and portrayals of the heavens by Western and Oriental astrologists. The planet-like seeds can be interpreted as pomegranate seeds symbolizing fertility. The geometric design, and the creature engraved in the centre of the goblet, are typical of the early Middle Ages. The Basilisk features prominently in 12th/13th century imagery, ... More

AMSTERDAM.- The highlight of the Old Master Paintings sale at Sotheby’s Amsterdam on Tuesday, 10th May, 2011 is A school class with a sleeping schoolmaster by Dutch Golden Age Artist Jan Steen (1626-1979). This painting may be regarded as one of Jan Steen’s finest treatments of a schoolroom interior. Furthermore, it is thus far his only known representation of a schoolroom that is both signed and dated and which has remained in private hands. The work has a remarkable provenance, going back as far as 1764, including the distinguished Baring Collection in the 19th Century. This exciting picture, dated 1672, perfectly demonstrates Steen’s mastery at depicting the humorous side of everyday life, which remains as true to life and as ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Klemens Gasser and Tanja Grunert present their second solo exhibition of Michael Alan. The exhibition is on view from April 28th through June 23rd, 2011. Collapsible Anatomy is a celebration of the universal condition: beauty, delicacy, strength and change. Assembling unusual and unique visual connections, it’s an exclamation of life at its strongest and most vulnerable state. This exhibition examines our deceptive frailty by exploring the relationship between emotional states and the physical body: how our feelings are reflected by our forms. The result is presented as an architectural, animated image. The combination of technique creates the illusion of volume and depth – by showing the inner workings, the guts and the worlds within us. Collapsible Anatomy is about the ways in which the corporeal manifests into emotional states and the intangible influences physical reality. Alan’s images are ... More

BRUSSELS.- Charles Riva Collection presents an exhibition of Selected Works by Paul McCarthy from 1993 to 2009, rarely shown in Brussels. Paul McCarthy's (1945) career, spanning over forty years of production, can at once be summarized as chaotic, grotesque, and provocative. His work stems from an adolescence in American popular culture saturated with corn syrup, ketchup, and coca cola, childrens' toys and Disney - materials and references which act as sweetened and cheapened metaphors for the very most basic elements of human life: sweat, blood, sex, desire, feces. McCarthy's world -as represented through his work- is cruel and euphoric but oddly familiar, often taking the form of a skewed allegory or fairytale (Pinocchio or Heidi, for example). His adaptations of these stories methodically predict human excess, spilling proverbial guts and blood to cut ... More
