NEW YORK, NY.- Celebrating a defining moment for the premier institution of modern and contemporary American art, and a landmark achievement in the public-private revitalization of downtown Manhattan, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the City of New York today broke ground for the Whitney’s new museum building on Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg joined Adam D. Weinberg, the Whitney’s Alice Pratt Brown Director, for a ceremony animated by music and performance, held before an invited audience of some 500 guests at the site of the Whitney’s future building, at the southern entrance to the High Line.

  Game Over! National Pinball Museum in Washington to Close After Just Five Months




The museum is being asked to leave to make way for mall renovations.

WASHINGTON (AP).- The National Pinball Museum in Washington is being forced to close after just five months. David Silverman, who put up $300,000 of his own money to help open the museum, tells The Washington Post he recently received a letter informing him he'll have to leave his third-floor space in Georgetown in mid-July. The museum features 200 pinball machines, some of which visitors can play, as well as displays detailing the art and history of the game. Silverman says he's being asked to leave to make way for mall renovations. Officials at Vornado Realty Trust declined to comment to the newspaper about the lease agreement. Silverman says he remains committed to keeping the museum alive. GRAND RAPIDS, MI.- Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park announces its most recent acquisition, "Neuron" by American artist Roxy Paine. The colossal stainless steel structure stands at 41 feet in the Cultural Commons, an expansive meadow enclosed by trees. Installation occurred in mid-April and the site is now officially open to the public. “It is an honor to be a part of this amazing collection and beautiful sculpture park,” said the artist. MADRID.- Patrimonio Nacional and the Museo del Prado today signed a collaborative agreement for the technical study and restoration in the Museum’s studios of The Crucifixion by Rogier van der Weyden. This is one of the masterpieces from the outstanding collection of Flemish painting assembled by Philip II that is known from documents to have been kept in the Royal Monastery of El Escorial since 1574. Together with The Descent from the Cross by Van der Weyden, now in the Prado, it is the most important work by this master from Tournai to be seen in Spain. The project is part of the Prado’s restoration programme, which has been sponsored by Fundación Iberdrola since 2010.   School of the Art Institute of Chicago Announces $5 Million Gift for LeRoy Neiman Student Center

CHICAGO, IL.- School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) President Walter E. Massey today announced that former SAIC Faculty Member and Alumnus LeRoy Neiman and his wife, Janet Byrne Neiman (also an SAIC alumna) will make a $5 million gift to the institution to help create a new student center within SAIC’s building at 37 South Wabash Avenue. LeRoy Neiman’s brilliantly colored, motion-filled images of sporting events and leisure activities have made him perhaps the most popular living artist in the United States. A 56-foot-long, eight-foot-tall mural entitled “Summertime Along the Indiana Dunes,”(1965), co-signed by LeRoy and Janet Byrne Neiman, will be prominently displayed in the student center. MOSCOW (AP).- For the first time ever, ordinary Russians can now see documents that appear to confirm long-standing rumors that Vladimir Lenin had Jewish heritage. In a country long plagued by anti-Semitism, such heritage can be a significant taint, especially for the founder of the Soviet Union who is still revered by many elderly Russians. Among dozens of newly released documents on display at the State History Museum is a letter written by Lenin's eldest sister, Anna Ulyanova, saying that their maternal grandfather was a Ukrainian Jew who converted to Christianity to escape the Pale of Settlement and gain access to higher education. New Gallery Launches in July 2011

Cuban Painter Loses Political Seat After Criticism

HAVANA (AP).- A prominent Cuban artist said he has been removed from his legislative post and forced to close his studio over his contacts with dissidents and a commentary that was posted on an anti-government blog. Pedro Pablo Oliva said in a message on his own website Monday that he was summoned by officials and told of a complaint filed by one of his colleagues in the Pinar del Rio provincial legislature. He said he was expelled and that members of the legislature called him a counterrevolutionary, traitor and "annexationist" — someone who wants Cuba to be taken over by the United States. He accepted that his behavior violated a code of ethics he accepted when he assumed the legislative post. but denied being disloyal, saying he was just expressing his opinions.
