Avant Garde Designing the Future

Before it was televised, the revolution was applied by progressive artists in central and eastern Europe to the objects and habits of daily life. These early 20th-century artists introduced revolutionary principles to the serial production of posters, magazines, and advertisements, paving the way for mass media, branding, and advertising. See where it all began, starting June 11, in Avant-Garde Art in Everyday Life.

Summer Hours New Free Hours

After five years of Target Free Thursday Evenings, free hours at the Art Institute are moving to the first and second Wednesdays of each month. Free Family Wednesdays arrive just in time for summer break, offering free admission to the museum all day during museum hours. Bring your family and friends on June 1 for your first free weekday! The museum will remain open late on Thursday evenings at regular admission price.

Pae White Pae and Kay

What does a collapsed rainbow look like? Can public art inspire us to do good? Find out this summer with two site-specific installations opening downtown. Pae White draws on her interest in graphic design, textiles, and animation to transform the Bluhm Family Terrace at the museum into a riot of color and play. See Restless Rainbow, which opened May 21.

And Kay Rosen brings her trademark language imagery to State Street in a public arts commission from the Chicago Loop Alliance. Rosen's installation is part of the Art Loop 2011 Go Do Good initiative and is complemented by a selection of her work on the second floor of the Modern Wing, on view until June 26. Be sure to catch these two site-specific installations on display throughout the summer.

AAA Galleries New Galleries

Good things come to those who wait. The Art Institute's superb collections of African art and Indian art of the Americas return June 3 to brand new galleries in the museum's lower Morton Wing. Working closely with California-based architectural firm wHY (Workshop Hakomori Yantrasast), our curators have created a space that presents an exciting range of forms and materials in a new light. Don't miss this world-class reinstallation that includes special loans like the spider silk textile and video installations by filmmaker Susan Vogel.

Summer Dining Summer Outdoor Dining

Summer arrives! Of course, Bluhm Family Terrace will be open for alfresco dining at Terzo Piano, but did you know that there are other outdoor dining options available all summer long? From Memorial Day to Labor Day, McKinlock Court will be home to McKinlock Court Small Plates menu service daily from 11:30 to 2:30, and on Thursday evenings from 4:30 to 7:15. In the mood for something quick? Grab a sandwich or salad to go at the North Garden Bistro, located in the North Garden on the corner of Michigan and Monroe. Tables are available so you can enjoy the garden while you eat. Each dining location has kid-friendly menu items too. For more information on summer dining options, call the Café Manager at (312) 443-3747.

Docent Docent Anniversary

Did you know that 2011 is the 50th anniversary of the Art Institute of Chicago's Docent Program? Imagine this: over the last 50 years, docents have introduced the museum and its collection to hundreds of thousands of students in Chicago and beyond. You may have been one of them! In honor of this anniversary, we are collecting stories from people of all ages about the experiences they have had with a docent in this museum, as recently as yesterday or as long ago as 1961. Send your story to aicdocent@artic.edu and become a part of our historical record.

American Gothic Pitch In!

The Annual Fund helps us accomplish everything we do: preparing a collection of masterpieces to move from storage back into the galleries, installing artworks for seven temporary exhibitions this spring, and providing more than 75 engaging art education programs every week. We can accomplish more together when you join or donate to the museum!
