LONDON (AP).- Still can't get enough of Britain's aristocratic headgear? Following hot on the heels of the royal wedding hatwalk, the crowning jewels of the country's once wealthiest woman are being offered for sale — a Victorian pearl-and-diamond tiara, bracelet, and brooch which auction house Christie's hopes will fetch as much as 1.9 million pounds ($3.1 million). The opulent jewels once belonged to Hannah Primrose, a socially and politically active heiress whose husband Archibald Philip Primrose would eventually become Britain's prime minister. Born into the powerful Rothschild family, Hannah reputedly became the country's richest woman when her father died in 1874, leaving her the then-immense sum of 2 million pounds in cash, a turreted mansion in England's Buckinghamshire, and a huge stash of jewels. She married ... More

Sir Michael Parkinson by Jonathan Yeo, 2010 © National Portrait Gallery, London.

LONDON.- A new painted portrait of the journalist, author and broadcaster Sir Michael Parkinson has been commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery, London, where it will go on display for the first time from Friday 27 May 2011. Painted in a variety of brown tones, the portrait in oil on canvas by Jonathan Yeo is a ‘head’ executed from life over five sittings in the artist’s London studio. The intimacy of Yeo’s close-cropped composition gives a sense of how it might feel to be faced by Sir Michael as one of his interview subjects, a privilege usually reserved for the famous. Parkinson came to prominence as a talk show host during the ‘golden age’ of British television in the 1970s. Best-known as the presenter of the flagship interview programme Parkinson (1971-1982, 1998-2007), Sir Michael, popularly referred to as ‘Parky’, began his career as a reporter on local papers in Yorkshire be ...   Fifty Objects Ranging from 6,000 B.C. to 2011 A.D. in "Cabinets of Curiosity" at James Cohan Gallery

The original curiosity cabinets—started during the 16th century—were often entire rooms that housed a broad collection of objects.

NEW YORK, NY.- James Cohan Gallery presents CABINETS OF CURIOSITY, featuring over 50 objects ranging from 6,000 B.C. to 2011 A.D. Collected together, these seemingly unrelated objects from around the world collapse time and space. As a group the objects pulsate with a spiritual energy that comes from their capricious juxtapositions. On their own, each object tells its own unique story of origin and use. The exhibition is on view until June 1, 2011. The question posed by the great Argentinian author Luis Borges is brought to mind: “Do books on a bookshelf speak to one another?” The original curiosity cabinets—started during the 16th century—were often entire rooms that housed a broad collection of objects such as paintings and sculptures, natural and man-made objects, and objects with alleged magical qualities. Our cabinets feature pieces from over twenty distinct regions— ... More

MECHANICVILLE, NY (AP).- Col. Elmer Ellsworth and James Jackson died within feet of one another, yet the perspectives reflected in historical markers to the two men are as far apart as the 333 miles separating one tribute from the other. Ellsworth's monument in this Hudson River city doesn't mention Jackson and Ellsworth's name doesn't appear on the plaque adorning the corner of the suburban Washington, D.C., building where Jackson's hotel once stood and where both men died 150 years ago this month. The monument marks the grave of Ellsworth, long recognized as the first Union officer to die in the Civil War. The plaque hails Jackson as the South's first ... More

STOCKHOLM.- Moderna Museet is the first museum in the world to present a complete exhibition of Klara Lidén. Her major exhibitions to date have been outside Sweden, and have attracted astonishing acclaim from critics and the public, but until now she has been relatively unknown in Sweden. This exhibition is organised jointly with the Serpentine Gallery in London and includes every facet of her oeuvre from 2003 to the present day: videos, stills, installations and a series of painted wall sculptures. The overall concept is a ghostly labyrinth with an unexpected secret chamber, designed especially by Lidén for Moderna Museet. The entrance to the exhibition has also been moved, to stress the many ways in which a building can be used. Architecture and urban planning are central to Klara Lidén’s oeuvre. She originally studied architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 2000-2003, but then went to Be ... More

Drawings also enjoyed a close relationship with prints during this period.

ATHENS, GA.- "The Art of Disegno: Italian Prints and Drawings from the Georgia Museum of Art" is on view at the Georgia Museum of Art through August 7. The exhibition features 53 works on paper produced in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Guest curators Babette Bohn, professor of art history at Texas Christian University, and Robert Randolf Coleman, associate professor of art history at the University of Notre Dame, chose these prints and drawings from the collections of GMOA and Giuliano Ceseri because they provide rare insight into the training, working habits and creative process of artists. For Italian artists of this era, the art of drawing was regarded as an intellectual as well as a practical activity, and the images found in this exhibition, according to Bohn and Coleman, represent examples of the most fertile and inspired artistic creations found on paper during this period. “Beginning in the 14th century ...
