LONDON.- Sotheby's Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 29 June in London will present a selection of works of major significance, including Francis Bacon's stunning Crouching Nude of 1961. In 1959 the appearance of the first female nudes painted by Francis Bacon must have struck the contemporary art audience as a startling iconographical switch. Between 1959 and 1962 he made twelve further paintings on this theme, among which Crouching Nude, 1961, is one of the most remarkable. Formally, it is the most resolved of this group in terms of the figure/ground relationship, as well as the most sculptural in the plasticity of the figure. The illusion of depth is accentuated by the simplified geometry of the perspectival setting, a confined space with a sloping dais base painted in several shades of the iridescent green that Bacon had essayed as a dominant colour for the grounds of his paintings in St Ives at the end of 1959.1 ... Peter Paul Rubens (15771640), Portrait of a Capuchin Monk. Oil on panel; 53.3 x 45 cm. Hohenbuchau Collection, inv. no. HB 92
VIENNA.- The Hohenbuchau Collection is one of the largest and most diverse collections of northern European Baroque art to have been assembled anywhere in the world over the past few decades. While it is a truism that every private collection reflects the personal taste of the person who has assembled it, what distinguishes these holdings from those of other private collections is a combination of intense focus on the one hand and wide variety on the other. The main focus of the collection is the painting of the seventeenth century, in particular the Dutch and Flemish Baroque, an era known as the Golden Age. Within these parameters, the collection aims at presenting this epoch and its schools both in terms of the multiplicity of its pictorial genres, ranging from the history painting, portrait, genre scene and landscape to the still life, and of the broad diversity within each individual genre. An interesting feature of the collection is that ... More | | Comprehensive Presentation of the Makart Phenomenon at the Belvedere in Vienna

VIENNA.- Like no other artist of the nineteenth century, the artist prince Hans Makart left his stamp on a time whose symbol he rose to become, and which went down in the annals of history as the Makart era. The Belvedere and the Wien Museum are devoting two exhibitions to this exceptional artist of the Vienna Ringstrasse period in a comprehensive presentation of the Makart phenomenon Makart: Painter of the Senses (Lower Belvedere) and Makart: A Painter Rules the City (Wien Museum in the Künstlerhaus). The focal point of the Belvedere show are Hans Makarts paintings, whose significance for modern art is being examined in an international context for the first time. The exhibition at the Wien Museum is dedicated to the highly varied relationship between artist, city, and society. Summoned to Vienna as a young talent by the imperial family, Makart, despite a lack of public commissions, was ... PARIS.- The Kneeling Fauness, a major work in marble by French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), is to be put up for sale at Cornette de Saint Cyr's Impressionist and Modern Art auction organised at Drouot-Montaigne, Paris, on Wednesday July 6th, 2011. Signed and dedicated on the base « Au Maître Puvis de Chavannes », this 21 5/8 in. high statue, conceived in 1887, was produced in its marble version circa 1890. An emblematic figure in Rodins oeuvre, The Gates of Hell, it expresses well the ambivalence of the sculptors feelings towards women, both muses and temptresses. Rodin conjures to perfection through the brilliant modelling of the body, the contorted face and the delicacy of bared skin. The Kneeling Fauness offers us a perfect example of the artists creation process: a deep knowledge ... More | Art & Stars & Cars: The Daimler Art Collection at the Mercedes-Benz Museum Stuttgart

Jules Dupré, Sunset on the Coast, ca. 187075, oil on canvas, The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (37.120).
BALTIMORE, MD.- Setting Sail features drawings, paintings, and prints of ships, sailors and the sea from the permanent collection of the Walters. The sea, and the men and women who make their living from it, have provided subjects for art from ancient times until the present day. In the 19th century, under the influence of Romanticism, the sea took on a new emotional resonance, becoming a metaphor for the overwhelming power of nature. This tendency can be seen in the expressive brushwork and somber palette Jacques Dupré (181189) used to paint At Sea, an image of boats beset by choppy waves. At the same time, in an era of global expansion, the world's oceans were of unparalleled economic importance. Artists were able to draw on a long tradition of maritime painting to depict the strength and enterprise of nations. A number of the works in Setting Sail explore the theme of naval conflict, from a painting by Pierre Nicolas ... More | DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum Presents Ursula von Rydingsvard: Sculpture
