HAMBURG.- JMW Turner was known to his contemporaries as a painter of the elements. In his landscape paintings, he created new and unusual combinations of earth, water, air and fire and closely examined their interactions. Turners vision of the elements as a singular power fused together by the forces of nature was linked to contemporary research in the natural sciences. New discoveries and insights replaced the traditional teachings of the four classical elements and freed them to be used by artists in new ways. In light of this background, landscape painting during Turners time was positioned to revolutionize artistic methods. ... MADRID.- Continuing a project from past years, the Instituto Cervantes presents an exposition of fifteen young Latin American photographers selected after a showing of their portfolios at the Trasatlántica Festival organized by PHotoEspaña and Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID), convened in Managua and Cartagena de Indias. The curators Rosina Cazali and Laure Terré have selected the work of 15 artists who reflect on the duality of heaviness and lightness, gravity and resistance, anxiety and hope. The photographs and the means used to produce them suggest this duality in an unavoidable way; the relationship between heaviness and lightness is always in tension, an eternal contradiction, and it affects the individual, as she is subject to the contemplation and digestion of ... The exhibition will be on view June 5 through August 7. In 2010, photographers Douglas Henderson and Greg Merrell documented these historic dungeons scattered along the West coast of Africa. The goal of photographing these sites was not an extensive articulation of the slave trade. Rather, the intent was to introduce the physical and symbolic poignancy of their presence to audiences that remain unaware of their existence and history. Indeed, some 12.5 million Africans passed through these or related portals never to return during the 350-year atrocity of the slave trade, one of the largest forced migration of people in history. More Napoleon Used Years on St. Helena to Learn EnglishPARIS (REUTERS).- Graying, ink stained notebook fragments showing Napoleon Bonaparte's efforts two centuries ago to grasp the English language go on auction in Paris at the weekend, alongside some 350 other Napoleonic artifacts. Defeated by the British at Waterloo and held on the remote Atlantic island of Saint Helena until his death in 1821, the French emperor used his time in captivity to learn English -- although the scraps show the military mastermind to be a less-than-model pupil. Written in Napoleon's spidery handwriting, the remnants of his lessons from a French count also in exile on Saint Helena show how the headstrong leader doodled to combat boredom, and struggled with the intricacies of English grammar. "Even learning English, he couldn't shake off the soldier, the army man inside him. His doodles are of walls and designs of military fortifications," said Jean-Pierre Osenat, chairman of Paris-based auction house Osenat, which is handling the sale. The auction house e ...
