SAM's American art collection | | | ARTS EDUCATION IN THE NEWS Good news from the White House! President Obama's Committee on the Arts and Humanities recently published a study that cites the importance of arts education in school reform. Reinvesting in Arts Education: Winning America's Future Through Creative Schools looks at data from schools across the nation and concludes that arts integration is an effective way to improve achievement across other subjects as well as improve attendance. Through the College Bound Scholarship the state of Washington guarantees tuition to a public college or university in Washington for low-income students in the federal free and reduced lunch program, provided that they maintain a 2.0 grade point average or higher and don't commit a felony in high school. The only catch is that in order to be eligible, a student has to sign up by June 30th of his or her 8th-grade year. As of mid-May, only 52% of eligible middle school students in Seattle were signed up for the program. The goal is to increase that to 100% by June 30th! Please share the above information, or Mayor McGinn's blog post on the subject, as widely as you can. Please be sure to include this link to the application: http://hecb.wa.gov/collegebound. For more information, email collegebound@hecb.wa.gov or call 1.888.535.0747. | | | FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Will the Wyckoff Teacher Resource Center (TRC) be open this summer?
