It later served various industrial functions, one of the most recent being a chrome bumper repair shop. Gérard Seghers, Saint Paul.
VALENCIENNES.- Gérard Seghers (on 1591 - 1651), painter of Antwerpen by big religious paintings, was subordinated for such a long time by the history to his illustrious contemporary Pierre-Paul Rubens (on 1577 - 1640). We can find tracks of the rubenian art in the painting of Seghers but no more than at the other antwerpers painters of the same generation The art of Gérard Seghers thinks in the other problems. The title of this exhibition shows well the questioning lifted by Seghers. Flemish painter, he made very early his journey in Rome (on 1611 - 1620), and in his return of Rome tried to impose this new art based on the art of the Caravaggio and called caravagisme. But instead of reproducing this Roman art in Antwerp, Seghers tried - and often succeeds - to mix him in the Flemish art of his time, resulting from artists of the XVIth century as Martin de Vos or Maarten van Heemskerck. To create this alchemy between the ancient and ... More | High Altitude: A Festival of Contemporary Mountain Photography in Switzerland

ROSSINIERE.- The mountain has been conducive to the affirmation of identities in Switzerland and elsewhere around the world. This theme has continued to fascinate artists since tours in the Alps by the painter Caspar Wolf in the 18th century. The mountainous landscape attracted the first generation of photographers in the 19th century, who managed to quickly produce extraordinary images. At the beginning of the 21st century, the mountain suddenly shows certain fragility as humans begin to infiltrate its environment. What remains of the myths associated with it ? Does the mountain still inspire artists today ? What perception does one have of the mountain when its inhabitants disappear and our references are more and more limited to the urban world ? After its initial success in 2008, the HIGH ALTITUDE festival of contemporary mountain photography raises the bar. From July to September, HIGH ALTITUDE will give you the opportunity to discover the works of forty ... More | | Mallick Williams & Co. Filippo Chia, Ella in Golden Bed, 2010. Edition of 3, 19" x 12" (unframed).
NEW YORK, NY.- Mallick Williams & Co. presents their first photography exhibition with artists Filippo Chia and Michael M Koehler. The title Nature/Human reflects the duality of the show: two photographers with two distinctive styles and perspectives. Chias pieces are digitally colored prints and Koehlers traditional black and white photographs. They both explore the same theme of the relationships between people and their environments; a beautiful and touching glimpse into vignettes that naturally occur in life: love, pain, beauty and sadness. In the words of the artists, Nature is what makes us Human. Regardless of humanitys attempt to be in control, we are consistently reminded that nature is ultimately in command. The exhibition is a testament to the moments in life where nature and humanity collide. The work reveals the tensions existing between the two forces but also asks us t ... More Mesolithic "Rest Stop" Found at United Kingdom Supermarket SiteBy: Alice Baghdjian LONDON (REUTERS).- An early prehistoric hearth has been discovered on the planned construction site for a branch of major British supermarket chain Sainsbury's. The charcoal remains, excavated from the site in Nairn, a town in the Scottish Highlands, date back to the Mesolithic period (10,000 to 4000 BC). They are believed to have been a temporary traveling stop rather than a settlement, due to the absence of any further Mesolithic findings at the site. "An extremely large quantity of wood charcoal fragments was recovered from the hearth. The size of the fragments suggests either deliberate deposition or in-situ burning," said Headland Archaeology, who carried out the excavation, in a report. Archaeologists used carbon-dating of the charcoal to determine the age of the hearth. However, dating a site from this particular substance is problematic, due the potential time lag between the felling of the tree and the burning of the material, the report said. The e ... More |
