Alter Ego: A Decade of Work by Anthony Goicolea

It’s the last month to see Anthony Goicolea’s first major solo exhibition. His surreal photographs, striking paintings, and thought-provoking installations are revealing self-portraits of a contemporary artist.

Mirror Image: Women Portraying Women
Through November 27 | Free

See what it means to be a woman in today's culture through the eyes of 13 North Carolina female artists. Mirror Image features painting, video, photography, and sculpture from the 1970s through today.

Summer Dance Series on the City Block
Saturday, July 23 | 2 pm | Free

Kristin Taylor and Company, a new dance group based in Durham, imagines the individual’s place in society through dance inspired by 30 Americans. A movement workshop follows the performance.

The summer series is in full swing and features a blockbuster list of movies and concerts for the month of July!

Outdoor Cinema

Outdoor cinema: The Kids Are All RightWhen the sun sets, join us under the stars for films on the big screen in the Museum Park. Flicks range from the dramatic to the kid-friendly, with something for everyone! And at $4 a pop, it's an affordable way to savor summer evenings.

Movies in July include The Town, The Kids Are All Right, How to Train Your Dragon, and The King's Speech, just to name a few. See the complete schedule.

Concerts

Iris DeMent Followed by True Grit
Saturday, July 16 | 7 pm

Music/Movie Combo: Iris DeMent and True GritIris DeMent lent her voice to the haunting soundtrack of the critically acclaimed True Grit remake by the Coen brothers. Hear her live at the Museum before a screening of the Academy Award-winning film.


Lucinda Williams

Wednesday, July 27 | 8 pm

Lucinda Williams has maintained her status as alt-country’s go-to crooner for over 20 years. Come hear her perform old favorites and new tracks from her latest album, Blessed. Tickets are selling fast—get yours now!


Teens and College Students

Sketchbook Saturday
Saturday, July 23 | 10:30 am

The Museum's new workshop for 11- to 14-year-olds teaches budding artists how to develop a sketchbook while exploring the collection indoors and out.

College Art Exhibition

The Museum is holding its first juried exhibition of college student artwork, Self, Observed, inspired by the upcoming Rembrandt exhibition and the Dutch master's interest in self-portraiture. College students are encouraged to submit self-portraits. Entries are due August 31.

From unique apparel and hand-made jewelry to Seagrove pottery and fine art books, the Museum Store features a carefully curated selection of gifts.

New in the Park

The Conversationalist by Chakaia Booker

The Conversationalist by Chakaia BookerInterlacing rubber fingers overlap and weave together a narrative, inviting the viewer into conversation. Made of repurposed tires, the sculpture refers to textiles, African art, scarification, and opposing viewpoints.

Visit the Museum Park to find the newest sculptural installation, located near Lowe’s Pavilion.

Chamber Music Returns

Mallarmé Chamber Players
Sunday, July 24 | 3 pm 

The Mallarmé Chamber Players kick off our next chamber music series with selections inspired by the special exhibition Alter Ego: A Decade of Work by Anthony Goicolea.


Art in the Evening

Join us during the five Fridays in July for small plates, wine, and live music as you explore the Museum after dark. Starting at 5:30 pm, begin your weekend on an artful note.


Kids' Activities

Creative inspiration abounds at the NCMA. Introduce little ones to the world of art through performances, workshops, craft-making, and tours of the collection designed with our youngest visitors in mind.
