WASHINGTON, D.C. (REUTERS).- Martin Luther King Jr stood 30 feet tall on the National Mall as a memorial to him was unveiled on Monday morning -- the first memorial on the Mall not dedicated to a war, president or white man. Fifteen years after a Congressional Joint Resolution in 1996 to establish a memorial in Washington, D.C. to honor King, the four-acre site on the Tidal Basin between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials opened to the public for the first time. "From a geometrical standpoint it's on a direct line between the Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial," said Bill Line, spokesman for the National Park Service. "The brains and essence of our country (Thomas Jefferson), and Abe Lincoln, the greater uniter." Visitors will walk through two massive white granite halves of the "Mountain of Despair" to reach the "Stone of Hope," from which the sculpture of King emerges. The winning design from an inte ... TIRANA (AP).- A U.S.-Albanian archaeological mission said Monday it has found the well-preserved wreck of a Roman cargo ship off Albania's coast, complete with some 300 wine jars — all empty, alas. The 30-meter long (yard) wreck dates to the 1st century B.C. and its cargo is believed to have been the produce of southern Albanian vineyards en route to western European markets, including France. A statement from the Key West, Florida-based RPM Nautical Foundation said the find was made 50 meters (yards) deep near the port city of Vlora, 90 miles (140 kilometers) southwest of the capital, Tirana, early this month. The foundation, in cooperation with Albanian archaeologists, has been surveying a swathe of Albania's previously unexplored coastal waters for the past five years. So far, experts have located 20 shipwrecks — including several relatively modern ones. "Taking into consideration the date and also the depth — which is well suited for excavation ... More

Diana Thater, Peonies, 2011. 9 video monitors, 1 DVD player. Dimensions variable. Courtesy of the artist. Photo: Peter Mallet, installation views at Hauser & Wirth, London, 2011.

COLUMBUS, OH.- Diana Thater’s Peonies, a nine-monitor videowall, is now on view through December 30 in the Wexner Center’s lower lobby. Quietly panning over pink and yellow peony blooms, the video initially appears to be a straightforward account of several flowers scattered across a watery surface. But as in most of Thater’s video projects, the technical aspects of Peonies and the artist’s investigations of duration and figure/ground relationships are as compelling as the work’s visual and aesthetic elements. Running nearly six minutes, Peonies was shot on two full rolls of 16mm film, but it is screened on a Blu-ray disc, inviting viewers to consider how representations of color differ in analogue and digital technology. Filmed up close, the blooms transform into abstracted washes of almost psychedelic color, morphing from one image to the next. The blooms become less tangible as physical objects and function instead as a field on which explorations of ... More

NEW YORK, NY.- Fünf Räume presents five emerging artists who have been given the opportunity to transform a distinct space within the gallery of the Austrian Cultural Forum New York by creating new, site-specific installations. Rather than attempting to create a specific, and potentially narrow, theme for these works to conform to, these selected artists are given the freedom to display their work with few limitations. Thus, Fünf Räume (German for ‘Five Rooms’) allows viewers to experience something unique and original while at the same time providing a glimpse into each artist’s pluridisciplinary practice, primarily within painting, sculpture, and installation. All participating artists live and work in Austria, and, despite their success and notoriety in Europe and elsewhere, have for the most part not yet been shown in the United States. Flight museum moving inland to Houston
GALVESTON (AP).- After sustaining more than $18 million in damage following Hurricane Ike almost three years ago, the Lone Star Flight Museum will be moving from the island city of Galveston to Houston. "I can't risk another 8 feet of water being in the facility," said the museum's executive director, Larry Gregory. The Houston Chronicle reported (http://bit.ly/oQdGKS ) that the museum will be relocated to Houston's Ellington International Airport, a former military field. Gregory said construction should begin in about 18 months and the move could take three years. Last week, the Houston City Council approved a 40-year contract with the museum for 14 acres at Ellington, said Ian Wadsworth, chief commercial officer for the Houston Airport System. The contract commits the museum to making at least $7.5 million in improvements. Gregory said that the $15,000 annual rent is about the same it's paying at Scholes International Airport in Galveston. At Ellington, the museum's 13 flyin ... More

Museum tells story of Japanese-American detainees
By: Ruffin Prevost
RALSTON, WY. (REUTERS).- It was a bittersweet return for more than 250 Japanese-American former detainees at Heart Mountain Relocation Center in the state of Wyoming who gathered for the opening of a museum about their wartime internment. A replica guard tower stands over the museum on a remote wind-swept plain where nearly 14,000 Japanese Americans were imprisoned in one of 10 such camps set up across the West after the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Backers of the $5.5 million, 11,000-square-foot museum next to the crumbling camp say they hope it will tell the story of those once forcibly relocated there and remind visitors of the enduring civil rights lessons from that era. "It's something like a dream come true," said Jack Kunitomi, 95, who was imprisoned in the camp with his family and who had a son born at Heart Mountain, east of Yellowstone National Park. Scant is left of the actual cam ... More
