MADRID.- From 21 September the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza is presenting for the first time in Spain the work of the Peruvian photographer Mario Testino. The exhibition Todo o Nada brings together 54 photographs that reveal the two opposing concepts to be found in his work, fashion and the nude. These concepts are present both in his better known activities as a fashion photographer, including the images that he has created for Vogue, Vanity Fair, V Magazine, Allure and The Face, as well as in his more personal creations, including a number of unpublished photographs specially taken for this exhibition. All combine analogue photography with the latest digital technology. For Mario Testino, the essence of the exhibition lies in contemplating the process and implications involved in the act of removing ones clothes to become naked: a voyage from haute couture to nudity, including the intermediary process that implies ... SANTA FE, NM (AP).- Beneath layers of paint, wrapped in bundles of brushes, hidden in sketch books and packed away among boxes of paints and pencils are clues that shed light on how Georgia O'Keeffe went about creating her colorful landscapes and iconic flower paintings. Like forensic investigators, curators at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe have spent months combing through their collection and now they're ready to share the many bits of evidence they have collected as part of the exhibition "O'Keeffiana: Art and Art Materials," which opens Friday and runs through next May. The collection of O'Keeffe's never-before-displayed art materials, preparatory drawings, Polaroids and a pair of unfinished paintings is designed to give visitors a better understanding of how the late American modernist transferred her ideas about the world around her onto ... NEW YORK (AP).- Among the hundreds of thousands of videos uploaded daily to YouTube, surely a work of art is in there somewhere. Such is the premise behind "YouTube Play: A Biennial of Creative Video," the first curated search for videos of a higher brow on the popular Google Inc.-owned website. From among more than 23,000 submissions from 91 countries, 125 videos were shortlisted for the inaugural biennial. A curatorial team from the Solomon R. A jury that includes filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and visual artist Takashi Murakami will whittle the results down further to about 20 videos. Those will be presented at the Guggenheim in New York on Oct. 21. "It's become increasingly obvious that this kind of creative video is completely core to YouTube," said Anna Bateson, director ... LONDON (AP).- Skis, photos, scientific instruments and other relics from Capt. Robert Falcon Scott's ill-fated expedition to the South Pole are going under the hammer this week at Christie's auction house. The items, which belonged to a Canadian member of the team, help fill out the picture of a doomed journey that has become an iconic British tale. Scott was beaten to the pole by a better-equipped Norwegian crew and died with four companions on the way back. "It has all the elements that define Britishness _ Brits in homemade, stuck-together materials and supplies trying to do something and failing heroically," Nicholas Lambourn, director of Christie's exploration and travel department, said Monday. The items up for sale on Wednesday belonged to expedition member Charles Seymour Wright, who found the tent containing ... As in all of Christenberrys photographs, the subject matter is the rural Deep South: the twisting back roads, open landscapes, rusted signage, and ramshackle vernacular architecture found in Hale County, Alabama. Though many of the sites pictured in this rare collection are new, other subjects grew iconic in Christenberrys oeuvre as he has returned to photograph them for decadesthe red building in the forest, Sprott Church, ... NEW YORK, NY.- Constantino Arias (1920‐1991) was a free‐lance photographer whose photos provide a rare and what is probably the most complete black and white picture of Havana society in the 1940s and 50s. Arias struggled to make a living in pre‐revolutionary Cuba where his only regular job was as house photographer for Havanas Hotel Nacional from 1941 to 1959. The hotel was a hangout of mostly U.S. tourists and inside the hotel Arias photographed the casinos and shows, the tourists at play; on his own time, he photographed ordinary Cubans at places like the Rumba Palace Bar, the terrible poverty (some of it just outside the doors of the hotel) and the growing political unrest. Jimmy the Painting Chimp Draws Hordes to Rio Zoo RIO DE JANEIRO (AP).- A retired circus chimpanzee is the Cezanne of simians, drawing crowds to a Brazilian zoo to watch him paint. The 26-year-old chimp called Jimmy has been producing surprisingly lovely paintings each day for three weeks at the Niteroi Zoo. Trainer Roched Seba said Monday Jimmy doesn't like the toys and other diversions that other chimps enjoy. So three weeks ago, Seba introduced him to painting after reading about animals in zoos elsewhere that enjoyed a little canvas time. Temperamental as great artists can be, Jimmy at times declines to paint if his cage is surrounded by too many gawkers. But for at least 30 minutes a day, he carefully dips his brush into plastic paint containers and uses broad, bold strokes to create his art. ... More
