Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Claims Painting is by Rembrandt Not His Pupil

Rembrandt van Rijn, Tobias and his wife, 1659 (detail), oil paint on panel, 40,3 x 54 cm, with frame: 65,5 x 78,5 x 9,5 cm, on loan of Foundation Willem van der Vorm, 1972. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

ROTTERDAM.- We have just been informed that Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has a new Rembrandt in the collection. According to the new standard work on the painter, the painting ‘Tobias and His Wife’ is not the work of a pupil of Rembrandt, but is by Rembrandt himself. From Thursday 7 October the painting will be exhibited for one month in the museum. The painting will be on view in the Old-Dutch staircase of the museum, between galleries 17 and 18 on the first floor. This week the Rembrandt expert Prof. Dr Ernst van de Wetering presented the fifth volume of the Rembrandt catalogue raisonné. His research demonstrates that the painting ‘Tobias and His Wife’ was painted by Rembrandt van Rijn and not, as was believed for many years, by a pupil of the master. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is pleasantly surprised ... More

HONG KONG (REUTERS).- A Chinese Qing dynasty vase sold for HK$253 million (20.2 million pounds) in a Sotheby's sale in Hong Kong on Thursday, a world record at auction for any Chinese porcelain. "This is definitely a milestone," Nicolas Chow, the Deputy Chairman of Sotheby's Asia told Reuters. "Chinese works of art took their place on the world auction stage today." While segments of the Chinese art market cooled substantially during the financial crisis, especially once white-hot Chinese contemporary art, older paintings and imperial antiques continued to generate solid demand and prices, though fewer quality works surfaced as sellers stayed away on still fragile sentiment. In Sotheby's current autumn sales, however, a selection of rare works from four major private collections and a flood of free-spending Chinese millionaires, contributed to what many called one of the best sales of Chinese ceramics ... PARIS (AP).- Paris City Hall has come under fire for barring minors from a museum exhibit of works by U.S. photographer Larry Clark, a show that includes sexually explicit shots of teenagers. Critics said the move was akin to censorship, with the French Human Rights League calling the decision "backward and reactionary." The Socialist-run mayor's office has expressed fears about legal challenges if it lets minors into the exhibit by Clark, who is also a filmmaker best known for the 1995 film "Kids," that caused a scandal for its raw portrayal of teens, sex and drugs. A 2007 French law forbids showing pornographic images to minors under 18 and is punishable with up to 3 years in prison and a fine of euro75,000 ($104,760). Yet Paris City Hall's cautious interpretation of the law ... More

LONDON.- Sotheby’s announced that the Spanish section of the 19th Century European Paintings sale on 23 November will be headed by two outstanding oil paintings by Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923). Depicting children by the sea, both works were painted over the same summer of 1904 on Cabañal beach, Valencia, a favourite location of the painter. Both works featured in Sorolla’s first major international exhibition of his work at Galerie Georges Petit in Paris in 1906, and have remained in two private collections for more than a century. El Pescador is dominated by the striking profile of a boy carrying a basket of fish as he walks along the shore. Behind him, in the distance, a group of younger children frolic in the sea. In Niños en la Playa two young boys sprawl at the water’s edge as they concentrate their attention on a toy sailing boat. Both scenes are bathed in the warmth of the Valencian sun. Controversial Artwork won't Be Returned to Display
LOVELAND, CO (AP).- A piece of artwork denounced as obscene by church members and allegedly ripped up by a Montana woman using a crowbar won't be returned to display because of safety concerns, city officials said Thursday. "The incident yesterday was very troubling and also very impactful on the city staff, volunteers and the public at the venue," said Rod Wensing, acting city manager. Kathleen Folden, 56, of Kalispell, Mont., was arrested Wednesday on a charge of criminal mischief. Witnesses told police that she used a crowbar to smash glass shielding the print at the Loveland Museum Gallery and then tore part of it up. Folden, a truck driver, told police that she drove from Montana and bought a crowbar in Loveland before going to the museum to destroy the artwork, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by The Coloradoan in Fort Collins. Police said the damaged part includes what critics say was a depiction of Jesus Christ engaged in a sex act. ... More
