The word

The Word

Better than a thousand words, is one word that brings peace. Buddha

The most terrifying words in the english language are, I'm from the government and I'm her to help you. Ronald Reagan

A picture is worth a thousand words. Napolean Bonaparte.

In the beginning was The Word... before cave paintings, before civilisation, before art even had a name. Now copy covers everything we see: advertising slogans, comment for the sake of comment and endless electronic chatter. The word is bent, borrowed, copied, stressed, abused and Twittered but it still retains that original power; the power of direct communication straight to the source.

No wonder artists dabble in it, covering the surface with crpytic text, glyphs and slogans. Craig Atkinson uses it as his standard modus operandi in paintings like Fake and Art This Way which critique the structures of the contemporary art market; Anthony-Leonard White uses script as his signature technique in his collages (have a look at Electic Documentation) while the Tate Sisters use grids of text and Michael Clay portrays his favourite writers and lyricists Bob Dylan, William Burroughs and Leonard Cohen. Go configure.
