New exhibition celebrates Lee Kelly | | October 2, 2010 - January 9, 2011 Lee Kelly chronicles the 50-year career of one of the Pacific Northwest's most distinguished artists. Though most widely known for his large-scale welded metal sculptures, which mark public sites throughout the greater Northwest, Kelly is also an accomplished painter with roots in the Abstract Expressionist movement. The exhibition features some 30 works including monumental sculptures, paintings, and drawings that highlight his remarkable artistic career. Studio Visit and Wine Tasting with Lee Kelly Sunday, October 10, 2-5:30 p.m. Enjoy an intimate, behind-the-scenes tour by Lee Kelly of his 5-acre studio site near Oregon City where he has created nearly all of his monumental sculptures. Artist-Led Tours: Lee Kelly Saturday, October 23, 2 p.m. Saturday, November 13, 2 p.m. Lee Kelly will take visitors on a personal tour through the exhibition, highlighting his influences, process, and evolution as an artist. $5 members, $12 non-members. | | Thomas Moran at Shoshone Falls | | October 23, 2010 - January 16, 2011 Later this month, visitors to the Portland Art Museum will have the opportunity to see one of the most important examples of 19th-century American painting: Thomas Moran's Shoshone Falls on the Snake River. This massive landscape painting, which depicts a breathtaking portrayal of the "Niagara of the West," is on loan from the Gilcrease Museum's permanent collection through mid-January. To ensure an optimal viewing experience, timed-entry tickets will be required on weekends. Reserve your tickets online to receive your preferred time slot. The evening will feature 16 projects imagined and curated by the Portland Art Museum's education department and faculty and graduate students in the MFA Arts and Social Practice concentration at Portland State University.
