RICHARD SENNETT
Craftsmanship Old and New
December 6, 6:00pm Lecture
SAIC Auditorium, 280 S. Columbus Drive

Chiefly known for his elegant and scholarly writing, Richard Sennett deftly explores the disciplines of architecture, design, music, art, literature, history, and political and economic theory.  Celebrated for his studies of social ties in cities, Sennett has produced more than a dozen books, including three novels, mostly on aspects of the urban experience and the interconnection between authority, modernism, and public life.  In the 1970s Sennett co-founded the New York Institute for the Humanities at New York University, and since the mid-90s he has split his time between NYU and the London School of Economics.  His books include The Fall of Public ManRespect, In an Age of InequalityThe Culture of New Capitalism; and most recently, The Craftsman

This presentation is supported in part by the William H. Bronson and Grayce Slovett Mitchell Lecture Series in the Departments of Architecture, Interior Architecture, and Designed Objects and Fiber and Material Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

About the Visiting Artists Program
Formalized in 1951 with an endowed fund from Flora Mayer Witkowsky, the Visiting Artists Program hosts public presentations by artists, designers, and scholars each academic year to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of contemporary art through discourse. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

Admission
Admission for all Visiting Artists Program events is FREE and open to the general public. Seating is first come, first serve. Doors open at 5:30pm. Due to an expected capacity crowd, please arrive early.

* Video and audio recordings of Visiting Artists Program events are prohibited unless advance permission is granted.

Parking
Public parking is available in the Monroe Street parking garage. The entrance is on Columbus Drive at Monroe. Parking for up to 12 hours is $13. Limited street parking and public transportation are also available.
