Although we can't all make amazing suits like Nick Cave, we can learn to repurpose old sweaters into new wearable pieces. Stefanie Girard's Sweater Surgery walks us through the basics of chopping up old sweaters and sewing them into purses, scarves, necklaces, clothing, toys and home decor pieces. A great resource to inspire your students to create their own recycled fashions out of closet cast-offs. Check out this book and other "how to" guides by searching the "Instructional" topic in the TRC Online Catalogue. DISCOUNTS FOR EDUCATORSTeachers receive 20% off membership to the Seattle Art Museum. What artistic connections exist between Nick Cave and Pablo Picasso? Both artists show how humble materials can become monumental through an artist's actions. They were also bothinspired by the history of masquerade across the African continent. In particular, Nick Cave's work explores global traditions of public performance and parade often found in African art. To learn more about SAM's collection of art from Africa, visit our online collection. | | | ARTS EDUCATION IN THE NEWS Much has been written recently in the local and national press regarding the Smithsonian Museum of Art's decision to remove artist David Wojnarowicz's film "A Fire in My Belly" from a recent exhibition. Museums and art organizations around the country, including SAM, have responded to this act of censorship by displaying Wojnarowicz's video in their own galleries. Censorship and contemporary art have a long history in the United States and it's a topic many of our teachers must consider when bringing visual images into the classroom. While certainly complex, works like "A Fire in My Belly" can prompt important teachable moments that connect to a wide range of disciplines. Contact trc@seattleartmuseum.org to learn more about teaching with contemporary art in your classroom. | | | FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Does SAM own all the works of art in the museum?
The works of art on display at SAM typically fall into one of two categories: permanent collection or special exhibition. SAM's curators work to bring the permanent collection and special exhibitions together by coordinating installations that draw connections between works of art throughout the museum. Works from special exhibitions such as Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris are usually only on loan to the museum for the run of the exhibition (just a few months) and are borrowed from other museums, artists or art collectors. Works in the museum's permanent collection typically belong to SAM and include our Native American, Modern & Contemporary, African, Asian, Ancient, European collections and much more! | | | NEED HELP GETTING HERE?
