New in the Galleries Paul Manship’s most accomplished sculptures are a pair depicting the Roman goddess Diana and the hapless mortal Actaeon. In classical mythology the goddess Diana was bathing with her nymphs when Actaeon chanced across the bathers while with his dogs. Diana was so incensed by this intrusion that she cast a spell, transforming Actaeon into a stag. Not recognizing their master, Actaeon’s own dogs attacked him. It is this dramatic tale that Manship depicts in the pair of sculptures now on view in the American Galleries. (Note: You may recognize one of Manship’s other well-known sculptures.) | Plan Your Rockwell Visit Time is running out! We recommend buying your timed tickets in advance to ensure you get a chance to see this captivating exhibition.
