LOS ANGELES, CA.- Cuba’s attempt to forge an independent state with an ambitious set of social goals, all the while moored to powerful political and economic interests, has been a source of fascination for nations, intellectuals, and artists alike. On display at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Center, May 17—October 2, 2011, A Revolutionary Project: Cuba from Walker Evans to Now, looks at three critical periods in the island nation’s history as witnessed by photographers before, during, and after the country’s 1959 Revolution. A Revolutionary Project juxtaposes Walker Evans’s 1933 images from the end of the Gerardo Machado dictatorship with views by contemporary foreign photographers Virginia Beahan (American, b. 1946), Alex Harris (American, b. 1949), and Alexey Titarenko (Russian, b. 1962), who have explored ... LONDON (AP).- An Egyptian princess who lived more than 3,500 years ago is the oldest known person to have had clogged arteries, dispelling the myth that heart disease is a product of modern society, a new study says. To determine how common heart disease was in ancient Egypt, scientists performed computer scans on 52 mummies in Cairo and the United States. Among those that still had heart tissue, 44 had chunks of calcium stuck to their arteries — indicating clogging. "Atherosclerosis clearly existed more than 3,000 years ago," said Adel Allam, a cardiology professor at Al Azhar University in Cairo, who led the study with Gregory Thomas, director of nuclear cardiology education at the University of California in Irvine. "We cannot blame this disease on modern civilization." The research was presen- ... More

BERLIN.- Camera Work presents photographs from Herb Ritts, on view from May 14 through July 02, 2011. More than 50 photographs give a comprehensive insight into the work of Herb Ritts, who passed away in 2002. All of the exhibited photographs were developed during the artist’s lifetime. In the 1980s and the 1990s, the autodidact worked together with nearly every superstar. Among the exhibited portraits one can find names such as Madonna, Mick Jagger, Dustin Hoffman, David Bowie, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jack Nicholson, and Cindy Crawford. Thanks to his unique vision, distinctive portraits as well as very aesthetic nude photographs came into existence.   Exhibition of James Castle's Isolated World Opens at Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid

An artwork by US artist James Castle is displayed as part of the exhibition 'Display and Collect'. EPA/JUAN M. ESPINOSA.

MADRID.- Primitive, outsider, vernacular or visionary are some of the words used to define the complexity of James Castle (Idaho, 1900-1977). The artist spent his life in rural Idaho, inventing his own artistic technique while creating totemic assemblage pieces, drawings and books resembling palimpsest. This exhibition is a departure from the critical apparatus that (mis)interprets the art of the mentally ill and instead shows Castle's work as a fractured vision of the world. Born in the State of Idaho in 1899, James Castle lived in isolation from the art world until his death in 1977. His artistic production, composed mostly by drawings made with soot and saliva, coloured cardboard constructions with strings attached and handmade books, have no titles, dates or any other indication of a chronology. The questions arising from his heterodox technique and the alteration of the tools of artistic classification are ... More

Sascha Weidner Celebrates the Beauty of the Perfect Moment at C/O Berlin Gallery

BERLIN.- It’s the moment that counts. It’s the source of everything—every perception, longing, dream, and remembrance. Sascha Weidner celebrates the beauty of the perfect moment and takes hold of it, turning an unflinching eye toward himself and his environment. His radically subjective cosmos of images is the poetic film of life, in which every shot is a statement of either life-affirming exuberance or hushed melancholy. Whether in photographs of rumpled white sheets, in macro shots of veined skin, or in images of mysteriously overturned cars or of the tender intimacy of lovers—every passing nuance is critical. And although each photograph seems almost hermetically sealed within itself, in combination, his images give rise to a dramatic dialog among the individual events. The cumulative visual chaos shows how ... More

Pug Dog Porcelain Snuff Box for Sale at Bonhams
LONDON.- A very rare Schrezheim porcelain snuff box in the form of a pug dog is expected to fetch £12,000-18,000 when it goes up for auction at Bonhams, New Bond Street on 5th July in the sale of the Helmut Joseph Collection of Porcelain Snuff Boxes. Around 1740, a series of pug related items were designed as secret emblems for a German underground Masonic-styled lodge known as the "Order of the Pug." Many were created by Johann Joachim Kaendler, master model maker of the Meissen porcelain factory in Germany, but the one for sale at Bonhams is a much rarer example from the Schrezheim factory. It is believed that the Order of the Pugs was created as a fraternal group for Roman Catholics who had been forbidden to join the Masons by Pope Clement XII’s 1738 bull, In Eminenti Apostolatus Specula, and that it was thought to have started by the elector of Cologne, Clemens August of Wittelsbach. Museo de Arte Carrillo Gil in Mexico City Presents Siqueiros: Landscape Painter
MEXICO CITY.- A term Siqueiros used to refer to the sketches that would eventually become murals, "portable paintings", are the works presented in this one-of-a-kind exhibition—consisting of approximately eighty paintings and drawings—that showcase the great muralist’s interest in, and profound study of, the elements that constitute a landscape; namely, open horizons, volcanic ranges, turgid forms, and even the first planes of telluric surfaces that are combined to render a complete emotional and dramatic experience. As with everything else in Siqueiros’ work, the landscape moves, vibrates, and its volumes become disproportionate in order to exalt the monumentality of the work. In the exhibition Siqueiros: Landscape Painter, visitors will also find an important selection of photographs and documents that ... More
