The splendors of Italian draftsmanship from the late Renaissance to the height of the neoclassical movement are showcased in an exhibition of 65 superb drawings assembled by the European private collector Wolfgang Ratjen (1943–1997). Works are featured by many of the most important artists of the period, from Giulio Romano to Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo. Outstanding Venetian examples include those by such artists as Domenico Tintoretto, Giovanni Battista Piranesi, and Canaletto, whose elegant rendering of the Giovedì Grasso festival in Venice is perhaps his finest surviving drawing. shop.nga.gov/nga/category.cgi?item=410000431917 (Exhibition Catalogue) www.nga.gov/exhibitions/italiandrawingsinfo.htm (Exhibition Information) |
| | | | With astonishing dexterity and an eye for minute detail, John Taylor Arms (1887–1953) created prints of monumental presence belying their modest size. A master at articulating the beauty of the great Gothic cathedrals, Arms also depicted modern marvels such as the Brooklyn Bridge. This exhibition spans the entirety of the artist's career and features some 65 prints and drawings, as well as examples of etching plates. The show will follow Arms' thematic groupings, organizing his prints into the series titles he designated, such as French Church, Gargoyle, Italian, and New York. www.nga.gov/programs/galtalks/#gothicspirit (Attend a Lecture) www.nga.gov/exhibitions/gothicspiritinfo.htm (Exhibition Information) |
