Sweet and Sunny SummertimeEnjoy the languid days and evenings in August at the Museum, where concerts and movies are going strong, and family events and lectures take art appreciation from passive looking to active involvement. Special Exhibitions30 Americans This awe-inspiring exhibition continues to draw visitors—have you been one of them? Thirty-one contemporary African American artists explore race relations, gender, identity, history, and popular culture.
North Carolina is home to many female painters, sculptors, and photographers. Mirror Image gives visitors a look at the world through their perspective. Landscape Sublime: Contemporary Photography The NCMA holds a striking collection of photographs, including many by the North Carolina artist John Menapace, who died in 2010. His work and that of other North Carolina photographers is now on view in East Building. Exhibition-Related EventsWomen Portraying Women Third Tuesdays @ Ten Deconstruct elements of 30 Americans in the City Block meeting space, located outside of the exhibition. This facilitated discussion will broaden your mind and your horizons. Riveting Dimensions of Manhood Jeff Sonhouse examines artworks that both celebrate and challenge African American male power. His provocative paintings of men with harlequin clothing and obscured, deadpan faces are a part of 30 Americans. Summer Dance Series on the City Block nosi DANCE theater, recently established in Durham, performs its world premiere on the City Block. Experience 30 Americans through choreography inspired by the exhibition. Kids and FamiliesSummer is winding down, but that doesn’t mean kids and family activities are! Wonderful Wednesdays features puppets and storytelling; Family Fun Saturdays introduce the whole clan to birds, noise, and colors; and What’s in the Box shows preschoolers age-appropriate and fun concepts in art. Teens and College StudentsArtist Trading Card Swap and Workshop Are you an artist? Do you want to have your art seen by others? ATCs are baseball-card-size handmade pieces of art that people trade, share, and collect. Submit cards to trade (the swap is free), or come to the hands-on workshop to learn how to make your own. The deadline to submit a card is August 8, and the workshop is August 13. Self, Observed College students are invited to submit their self-portraits for a juried exhibition inspired by the upcoming Rembrandt in America. Early submissions are already on view on the exhibition's Tumblr page. Arts in the Museum ParkOur concert series takes on a folksy and traditional tune with Gillian Welch, Leo Kottke, Battlefield Band, and the Carolina Chocolate Drops. These modern musicians with old-time roots will keep your feet tappin’ and your hands clappin’ all through the night. Films this month range across the genre spectrum! The silent film Our Hospitality follows the computer-generated family flick Rango, and modern classics The Social Network and Inception are interspaced with cult hit Back to the Future. In the GalleriesThree Graces: Les Trois Femmes Noires by Mickalene Thomas Mickalene Thomas’s bejeweled, lacquered panels display African American women in confident, provocative poses that both highlight stereotypical notions of beauty and celebrate femininity and power. Her works are familiar to the Museum as a part of 30 Americans, and a recent acquisition to the NCMA’s permanent collection, Three Graces: Les Trois Femmes Noires, will be on view in the Modern and Contemporary galleries in West Building starting August 16. | See Rembrandt for FreeJoin the Museum today and see the upcoming exhibition Rembrandt in America for free.
