NEW YORK (REUTERS).- A life-size bronze sculpture by Henri Matisse, which has never been sold at auction, is expected to be the star of the autumn art sales and could fetch up to $35 million, art experts said. Matisse's "Back IV (Nu de Dos, 4eme etat)," circa 1930 is being sold at Christie's on November 3 by a private European collector, whom the auction house declined to name. But Christie's said the owner recognizes the tremendous market opportunity for modern sculpture at this time. "Conceived on an epic scale, Back IV is a powerfully reductive expression of the human form that stands as a milestone in the evolution of modernist style," said Conor Jordan, the head of Impressionist and Modern Art for Christie's Americas. Another life-size sculpture, Alberto Giacometti's "Walking Man I," briefly ... More

Exceptional Painting by George Stubbs to Be Offered for Sale at Sotheby's London in December

George Stubbs, Brood Mares and Foals (detail), Oil on canvas, Estimate: £10-15 million*, 100cm by 187cm. Photo: Sotheby's.

LONDON.- On Wednesday, December 8, 2010, Sotheby’s London will present for sale arguably the finest painting by the British master George Stubbs (1724-1806) ever to come to the market: Brood Mares and Foals, estimated at £10-15 million. Painted in 1767, at the height of the artist’s career, the mares and foals scene is a superlative example of Stubbs’ talents as both a horse and landscape painter. Never before offered for sale, the painting has remained in a distinguished family collection for all of its life to date and its appearance at auction therefore represents an exceptionally rare opportunity for both equestrian and British art collectors alike. The painting was probably commissioned by Colonel George Lane Parker, the second son of George Parker -- the second Earl of Macclesfield of Shirburn Castle, Oxfordshire -- and an important owner of Stubbs’ work. It then passed to Thomas Parker, the third Ea ... More

This rare painting by Zhang Xiaogang sold for nearly US$7 million in Hong Kong. Photo: Sotheby's.

HONG KONG.- After strong showings at this year’s spring auctions in Hong Kong, we expected new Chinese collectors to dominate at Sotheby’s Contemporary Asian Art auction today in Hong Kong as they have at other recent wine, jewelry and jade sales. Apparently these collectors were in a buying mood today, as they pushed prices for top blue-chip contemporary artists — including Zhang Xiaogang, Fang Lijun and Liu Yue — beyond already high expectations, bringing the auction’s grand total to HK$210 Million (US$27 Million), comfortably above pre-sale estimates of HK$150 million (US$19 Million). Much as they have in other auctions over the past 18 months, collectors mainly from the Chinese Mainland showed a strong preference for works by increasingly scarce Chinese artists like Zhang Xiaogang, whose rarely seen early painting “Chapter of a New Century – Birth of the People’s Republic of China II” (1992) sold, apparently ... 100-Year-Old Pennsylvania Museum Time Capsule Found Spoiled
PITTSBURGH (AP).- Western Pennsylvania officials were hoping for a grand unveiling of a century-old time capsule over the weekend, but they say both the capsule and their plans were spoiled. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review says the copper container was removed from the cornerstone of the 100-year-old Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh last week. But inside, officials found 11 cents in change, two lead soldiers, a tattered silk flag — and rotted news pulp, Confederate currency and photographs. Officials say the lid of the cornerstone was apparently never soldered shut so moisture got in. Museum officials plan to try to save what they can, and next year entomb a new capsule to be opened by Pittsburghers of the early 22nd century. ... More
