Autumn is upon us and with it comes a host of events designed to get you in the mood for crisp Edinburgh nights out. From leaf-crunchingly good drop-in events at the Royal Botanic Gardens, to Hallowe'en favourites at the King's Theatre, there's something for everyone this October.

| New Season of Events at Dance Base Leith
|
Dance Base have officially launched their beautiful new studio at Thomas Morton Hall. This means they are expanding their services of dance classes not only to folks living near the city centre in the Grassmarket, but also in Leith. The opening night at Thomas Morton Hall was a great success, and pictures from the night can be seen at the Dance Base Flickr page here.
Classes at the Grassmarket AND Thomas Morton Hall have now begun. It's not too late to get on a course (enrolment closes this Friday), so get on your dancing shoes and call 0131 225 5525, book online at the Dance Base website or head along for a drop-in class at either venue.

Internationally renowned contemporary dance company Phoenix Dance Theatre visit Brunton Theatre for the first time with Declarations.
With a live microphone at its heart, Aletta Collins' Maybe Yes Maybe, Maybe No Maybe blends movement and voices to create a fresh and witty piece, whilst Isira Makuloluwe's Locked in Vertical sees dancers coil and turn their way through a breathtakingly fluid new work. Inspired by the words of Barack Obama, Warren Adams' The Audacious One is packed with tense, political intrigue. Much-loved former Scottish Ballet dancer Paul Liburd MBE, winner of the National Dance Awards Critics' Circle Award for Best Male Dancer 2009, returns to Scotland as a guest artist for this piece. The bill is completed by a welcome return to the stage for the critically acclaimed Haunted Passages, Philip Taylor's poignant and atmospheric look into a world between asleep and awake.

A concert of music for guitar and flute including tango music by the Argentinian composer Piazzolla, the Mexican composer Manuel Ponce's classic song Estrellita, beautifully evocative music by the Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos, the Italian composer Iannarelli's Homage to Fellini and music by Bartók and Debussy. Morgan also performs music by popular Spanish composer Tarrega and by Alec Roth written especially for him.
Born in Mexico City, and of Scottish and Mexican descent, over the last year Morgan Szymanski has been selected as 'one to watch' by Gramophone Magazine and BBC Music Magazine and was the featured artist on the cover of Classical Guitar Magazine.
Described by Classic FM as "one of the top 5 international flautists", in 2009, at the age of 21, Adam Walker was appointed principal flute of the London Symphony Orchestra and received the Outstanding Young Artist Award at the MIDEM Classique Awards in Cannes, in partnership with the International Artist Managers' Association. In February 2010 he won a prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship Award.

The Meadows Chamber Orchestra open their season with Nordic music at the Queen's Hall. Robin Page will conduct the MCO for the first time, bringing with him a wealth of high-level professional experience and special interest in Scandinavian music. With the brilliant young soloist, Alexandra Wood ('.....highly charged yet imaginatively refined' - The Times) in the Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor, Peter Maxwell Davis' Ojai Festival Overture, and Cark Nielsen's lovely 1st Symphony demonstrating the composer's gifts for melody and orchestral colour, this programme will be an exciting start to the season.
And especially for young people interested in meeting the soloist, Alexandra Wood is looking forward to talking to everybody about violin playing and, in particular, her preparation of the Sibelius Concerto in the Hope Scott Room during the second half.

Shining Lights: The Story of Scotland's Lighthouses

More than 6,200 miles long and including more than 760 islands, the jagged Scottish coastline is one of the most dangerous in the world. Shining Lights: The Story of Scotland's Lighthouses tells the story of the people who designed, built and operated Scotland's lighthouses, lighting a safe passage for mariners for more than 250 years. The exhibition will mark next year's 200th anniversary of the lighting of the world's oldest rock lighthouse, the Bell Rock near Arbroath.
Spectacular giant optics, lighthouse models and interactive exhibits will be amongst the objects used within Shining Lights to explore the development of lighthouse technology. This ranges from the Egyptian Pharos lighthouse of Alexandria over 2000 years ago and the towers topped with bonfires that formed the first 17th century Scottish lighthouses, to the fully automated systems that mark the Scotland's coastline today and are now controlled from a single room in Edinburgh.

The highly acclaimed Edinburgh Festival Chorus is looking for enthusiastic and talented amateur singers to perform with internationally renowned conductors, orchestras and soloists during the Edinburgh International Festival and for other singing engagements throughout the year.
The Chorus rehearses on Tuesday evenings from November to May and from July throughout the Festival period with Christopher Bell in The Hub.
