Dear omss,

Autumn is upon us and with it comes a host of events designed to get you in the mood for crisp Edinburgh nights out. From leaf-crunchingly good drop-in events at the Royal Botanic Gardens, to Hallowe'en favourites at the King's Theatre, there's something for everyone this October.
New Season of Events at Dance Base Leith

Classes at the Grassmarket AND Thomas Morton Hall have now begun. It's not too late to get on a course (enrolment closes this Friday), so get on your dancing shoes and call 0131 225 5525, book online at the Dance Base website or head along for a drop-in class at either venue.

Festival Theatre

Don't miss Mozart's unstoppable masterpiece. Set in the late 18th century, this new production brings to life a lively, stylish world where position is everything and the upstairs/downstairs divide is absolute. Blending breathtaking arias and ensembles with irrepressible characters and chaotic humour, this is Mozart at his theatrical best. Internationally renowned baritone Sir Thomas Allen directs, and Thomas Oliemans, Figaro in 2007's The Barber of Seville, returns to the title role. Acclaimed Mozartian baritone Roderick Williams sings Almaviva and Scottish soprano Kate Valentine sings the role of the Countess.
Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Genticorum
The Queen's Hall

GenticorumSaturday 9 October, 8pm

The Queen's Hall first met Genticorum when they opened up for the Michael McGoldrick Band in May 2009. They were blown away by them and have been trying to get them back for a headline show ever since. Firmly rooted in the soil of their native land of Québéc, the energetic and original traditional 'power trio' - Yann Falquet, Alexandre de Grosbois-Garand and Pascal Gemme - also incorporates the dynamism of today's North American and European folk cultures in their music. They weave precise and intricate fiddle and flute work, gorgeous vocal harmonies, energetic foot percussion and guitar and bass accompaniment into a big and jubilant musical feast.

"Another rattling good group from Québéc. They've produced a recording of foot-tapping tunes & evocative songs which can hold its head up anywhere good music is played" (Living Tradition)

"This is bracing stuff, replete with gorgeous three-part harmony singing and powerful instrumental work on flute, violin, guitar and fretless bass - not to mention the high-energy tapping feet of Pascal Gemme." (Hot Press)

With the brilliant young soloist, Alexandra Wood ('.....highly charged yet imaginatively refined'  -  The Times) in the Sibelius Violin Concerto in D minor, Peter Maxwell Davis' Ojai Festival Overture, and Cark Nielsen's lovely 1st Symphony demonstrating the composer's gifts for melody and orchestral colour, this programme will be an exciting start to the season.
And especially for young people interested in meeting the soloist, Alexandra Wood is looking forward to talking to everybody about violin playing and, in particular, her preparation of the Sibelius Concerto in the Hope Scott Room during the second half.

Light up your life with Scotland's Lighthouses
National Museum of Scotland
Shining Lights: The Story of Scotland's LighthousesShining Lights
Friday 15 October 2010 - Sunday 3 April 2011

More than 6,200 miles long and including more than 760 islands, the jagged Scottish coastline is one of the most dangerous in the world.  Shining Lights: The Story of Scotland's Lighthouses tells the story of the people who designed, built and operated Scotland's lighthouses, lighting a safe passage for mariners for more than 250 years.  The exhibition will mark next year's 200th anniversary of the lighting of the world's oldest rock lighthouse, the Bell Rock near Arbroath.

Spectacular giant optics, lighthouse models and interactive exhibits will be amongst the objects used within Shining Lights to explore the development of lighthouse technology. This ranges from the Egyptian Pharos lighthouse of Alexandria over 2000 years ago and the towers topped with bonfires that formed the first 17th century Scottish lighthouses, to the fully automated systems that mark the Scotland's coastline today and are now controlled from a single room in Edinburgh.

Coming soon at the Lyceum is Oscar Wilde's delightfully fun and pacy romp through posh society, The Importance of Being Earnest.
Gwendolen loves Ernest, Jack loves Gwendolen, Algy loves Cecily and Cecily loves Ernest. But not the same Ernest. Though she doesn't know that. And neither do the others. Oh, and Jack IS Ernest. And so is Algy.

It's silly, it's clever, it's funny, and it's not to be missed.

Find out more at www.lyceum.org.uk/earnest

And while you're there, take a look at the Lyceum's "Handbag" videos. Inspired by Lady Bracknell's legendary cry, "A handbag?!?," the Lyceum Theatre are running a competition to win dinner for 2 at The Witchery (plus show tickets and a signed programme).

All you have to do is video yourself saying the immortal line, post it online and send over the link (or even just the video itself). The best videos will be posted  on the Lyceum website and Facebook page and then Alexandra Mathie (Lady B) will pick the best one to win the prize.
