Fall Film Series Sanjuro Friday, October 8 | 8 pm Museum Auditorium
Akira Kurosawa was internationally famous for his spectacular samurai films. Sanjuro is a disreputable warrior, the hero of Kurosawa's Yojimbo. The director was urged to revive the beloved rogue by his studio, which craved another box office smash. Written as a parody of more straitlaced samurai films and costarring Yuzo Kayama, the teen heartthrob of the day, it's simply meant to be fun.
Sanjuro (1962) Directed by Akira Kurosawa. Toshiro Mifune, Tatsuya Nakadai, Keiju Kobayashi. (96 min.)
A cynical warrior helps an idealistic group of young nobles vanquish evil in a lighthearted samurai romp. The hero’s scruffiness contrasts satirically with the elegant manners of the elite who desperately need his protection. A perfect 100 percent positive on the rotten tomatoes meter.
