Surrender to Summer

The arrival of June means two things: the slower pace of summer has arrived, and the season for entertainment under the stars is here! See a movie, dance at a concert, explore our special exhibitions, or learn something new at our many programs.


Arts in the Museum Park

The weather is right for outdoor entertainment in the evening. Join us to hear renowned musical artists and see blockbuster films on the big screen.

Béla Fleck and the Flecktones
Saturday, June 4 | 8 pm

Tickets are going fast for the original lineup of premier banjo player Béla Fleck’s “blu-bop” band. A review of the group's latest album, Rocket Science, says, "The easygoing camaraderie and competitiveness that made The Flecktones's early performances so uplifting and filled with positive energy is back." Get your tickets soon!

Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue
Saturday, June 11 | 8 pm

Trombone-playing sensation Troy Andrews, also known as Trombone Shorty, and his band Orleans Avenue bring their fusion of jazz, hip-hop, soul, and funk to the Museum. This is sure to be a concert to remember! Get your tickets now.


BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet
Saturday, June 18 | 8 pm

Cajun country comes to Carolina with the Grammy Award-winning BeauSoleil avec Michael Doucet. Doucet has also received a National Heritage Fellowship for his work to promote Cajun culture. Purchase tickets online.

Alter Ego: A Decade of Work by Anthony Goicolea

Cuban American artist Anthony Goicolea explores familial ties as well as ties to the natural world in his fantastical, digitally manipulated photographs and drawings.

Mirror Image: Women Portraying Women

Featuring North Carolina artists from the NCMA's collection as well as other local artists, Mirror Image showcases what it means to be a woman in today's world.


Children, Teens, and Family Events

From preschool to high school and beyond, the Museum has events for all ages this summer.

New! Sketchbook Saturdays
Saturdays, June 4, July 23, August 20 | 10:30 am

Tweens and teens learn how to keep their own artist sketchbook while being inspired by works of art on display. Registration is required for this new program; sign up for one session or all three.

Family Fun Saturdays: Awesomely Abstract, Art in the Park
Saturdays, June 11, June 18 | 10 am and 1 pm

Discover and create abstract art with the whole family, or take a trek into the Museum Park to tap into your creative energy. These workshops fill up fast—reserve your spot today!


Wonderful Wednesdays: Great Stories for Young Folks
Wednesday, June 15 | 1 pm

Experience the art of storytelling through rhyme with Gran’daddy Junebug, whose “sto’etry” combines whimsy and moral tales to the delight of kids and adults. Next up in our Wonderful Wednesdays series: Movin’ to the Jukebox on June 22 and Poetry for Kids of All Ages on June 29. Tickets are available now!

What's in the Box: Places
Thursday, June 16 | 10 am

What places can you find in the Museum’s collection? What’s in the Box lets preschoolers and their caregivers discover and interact with the Museum in fun, age-appropriate ways. Sign up that day.

High School Digital Photography Workshop
Monday–Friday, June 20–24 | 1–5 pm

Teen photographers get acquainted with art at the Museum, take their own photographs, and learn how to digitally manipulate images in this weeklong camp. Call the Box Office to register.

Family Fun in the Setting Sun:
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1
Saturday, June 25 | 9 pm

The penultimate film in the Harry Potter series, The Deathly Hallows: Part 1 sets the stage for the final battle in the struggle between Harry and his friends and You-Know-Who. Join us before the film for fun activities and giveaways starting at 7:30 pm!

Art in the Evening

In the Galleries

In the early 18th century, children were expected to grow up as fast as possible. A slightly more relaxed attitude prevailed in the second half of the century, as shown in the portrait of The Oddie Children by Sir William Beechey.
