MADRID.- The Museo Thyssen‐Bornemisza and Fundación Caja Madrid present Heroines, a comprehensive survey of the depiction of women as the protagonists of key roles and as manifestations of the gender identity crisis in western art. The exhibition, on view until 5 June 2011, focuses on strong women: active, independent, defiant, inspired, creative, dominating and triumphant. These female figures are notably different to the seductive, complacent, defeated or enslaved ones that acted out the submissive and passive models traditionally associated with two prevailing and associated stereotypes: motherhood and the erotic object. To employ a key term in feminist discourse from the last two decades, this exhibition focuses on images that have the potential to be sources of empowerment for women themselves. From Greek mythology to the subversive images of conte ... More | | | Exhibition of Magnificent Andean Tunics on View at Metropolitan Museum

NEW YORK, NY.- The Metropolitan Museum of Art will present a special exhibition focusing on the Andean tunic, beginning March 8. Featuring some 30 tunics drawn from the Museum's collection with loans from The Textile Museum, Washington, D.C., The Cleveland Museum of Art, and two private collections, The Andean Tunic, 400 BCE 1800 CE, will examine the form of the tunic, essentially a type of shirt, which had an important cultural place in Andean South America for centuries. Textiles, a much developed art form there in ancient times, were themselves valued as wealth, and tunics were among the most treasured of them. The ancient peoples of northwestern South America are renowned today for their great abilities as weavers, dyers, and designers of textiles. The primacy of cloth was established with the beginnings of civilization in the region that is now Peru, when manipulating fibers into functional, and decorated, fabric ... LONDON (AP).- And then there were some lots, in fact. The British Museum announced Monday it has acquired 6,000 ancient carved ivories that were excavated in Iraq with the help of mystery maven Agatha Christie. The pieces were found at the site of the Assyrian capital of Nimrud between 1949 and 1963 during an expedition led by British archaeologist Max Mallowan. His wife, Christie, was part of the team and helped clean and preserve the objects when not working on thrillers including "They Came to Baghdad." The pieces, which are almost 3,000 years old, once decorated furniture, horse trappings, chariots and containers and would have been adorned with gold and precious stones. Originally imported as booty from cities along Mediterranean, they were discovered in a royal arsenal within a palace at Nimrud, just south of the modern city of Mosul in northern Iraq. Nimrud was the capital of the ... More | | Newly Acquired Turner's "Modern Rome-Campo Vaccino" on View at the Getty

PHILADELPHIA (AP).- It was one of the worst acts of terrorism in U.S. history, a deadly deed that filled the New York City sky with smoke and debris, thrust the nation into war, prompted restrictive new laws and intensified hostility toward foreigners. Yet it happened nearly a century before the Sept. 11 attacks, on Black Tom Island, a munitions depot in New York Harbor sabotaged by German agents and American collaborators in 1916. This and other examples of domestic terrorism are part of a new exhibition at the National Constitution Center, tracing the evolution of revolution and exploring how panic and prejudice can disrupt the balance between safeguarding civil liberties and protecting the public.
