The Ethics of the Encounter 2 Stills
|
Social Documents - The Ethics of Encounter 2 The Atlas Group; Francois Bucher; Dani Marti; Artur Zmijewski Until Sunday 13 March When artists site their practice within the fabric of social relations, documentary modes often play a central role in mediating events and experiences. Though the resulting material often bears a close resemblance to ethnographic mapping, investigative journalism or even community work, in contrast to the strict ethical codes to which these disciplines adhere many of today's artists operate in somewhat murkier waters. www.stills.org 23 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh

Les Diaboliques Friday 18 - Thursday 24 MarchSadistic cruelty, bitter hatred, murderous betrayal... This classic re-release of Clouzot's razor-sharp thriller remains one of the most Hitchcockian of all the films made by the French master of suspense. The wife and the mistress of the tyrannical headmaster of a seedy boys' boarding school conspire to put an end to his callous brutality. Much imitated but seldom bettered, the film can also lay claim to a clutch of excellent performances; not just Véra Clouzot, Simone Signoret and Paul Meurisse as the misbegotten ménage-à-trois, but a young Michel Serrault as a teacher and the inimitable Charles Vanel as a canny detective.
