Winter/Spring Film Series Sunny Side Up Friday, March 11 | 8 pm Museum Auditorium
If you love Singin' in the Rain—the brilliant MGM musical that looked back at the earliest days of the talkies—but wondered if maybe they were exaggerating just a little, you can decide for yourself after you see Sunny Side Up. Janet Gaynor (the first winner of the Best Actress Oscar) and Charles Farrell were known as "America's Favorite Lovebirds." But with sound they had to sing and dance, as well as talk, and they tackle it all with charm and pluck. Would any modern movie stars step so far outside their comfort zone?
Sunny Side Up (1929) Directed by David Butler. Janet Gaynor, Charles Farrell, El Brendel, Marjorie White. (120 min.)
Silent-screen sweethearts Gaynor and Farrell take the musical plunge in this Cinderella story from the dawn of sound. The Broadway songwriters DeSylva, Brown, and Henderson provide the showstopping production number “Turn on the Heat,” which author Richard Barrios says “can, with Spartan restraint, only be termed a lulu.” Preserved by the Museum of Modern Art with support from the Film Foundation and the Franco American Cultural Fund.
